New PS3 Firmware Contains Backdoor

Vectormatic noted the rumor floating around that the most recent PS3 patch has a backdoor, and "Sony can now remotely execute code on the PS3 as soon as you connect. This can do whatever Sony wants it to do, such as verifying system files or searching for homebrew. Sony can change the code and add new detection methods without any firmware updates."

And then Geohot exploited it to open up the PS3. And then one of the first announced use of the CFW was copying games onto the hard drive. Really, it looks like Sony's only mistake was offering the Other OS feature so the /. community could whine about it being taken away when it was exploited to pirate games. Do I like that they took away the Other OS feature? Not really. Now that they can remote ban CFW maybe they'll give us back the Other OS feature and I can play online using a dual boot like I had before Other OS was taken away.
