Facebook's Server Room, Penthouse Cooling Caught On Video

1sockchuck writes "We've seen specifications and photos of Facebook's new data center in Oregon. Data Center Knowledge now has video tours of Facebook's server room and cooling system. The tours, conducted by Facebook Director of Datacenter Engineering Jay Park, showcase the Open Compute Project designs for servers, UPS units and two-tier 'penthouse' cooling system design."

I, too, think Facebook is the ultimate waste of time unless you are selling something. I guess that is the main problem I have with it, that most people are socially 'selling themselves' in terms of their own ideals of popularity and comparison/competition. We like to compare and contrast each others lives so much to try to get a clear picture in our head of where we stand in life. This is our lives nowdays, too busy to call people back, so eventually we lose touch with them. But now we can pretend they are important enough to call them again, or at least send an email or PM. I'm sick as hell of all the press it gets, and how much money they've made off such a pointless social media fad. Wow we must be in the 21st century, all my friends are on the internet now, who'da thunk it?

People seem to love the fact that they can 'get in touch with old friends' i.e say hi to them once, then spy on their lives and feel like they have more close friends than they actually do. I really never understand why so many people adopted it, when myspace was the SAME EXACT CONCEPT but 'not for adults' for some reason... Bah. I personally liked myspace a lot better since I could host my music there as well, Facebook is huge but still too cheap for that even with a massive data center (which is SOLELY DESIGNED TO HARVEST YOUR INFO FOR ADVERTISING IN WAYS BARELY IMAGINABLE). But social networking is the type of thing that can only keep me occupied for an hour a month at the most anyway, and after a couple of months I am completely bored with it. Real life > *. But the masses love it, go figure. I see it as what the creators probably now see it as.. another advertising revenue with a few years left to live. All software and hardware have a life cycle. Facebook is in the same boat and eventually many will probably look back and question its popularity the same as I do now.

Also I love how anyone who disagrees with you is Stalin. Who's the facist who thinks no one else should have a difference of opinion?

As an HVAC engineer I was interested in the cooling design and then subsequently disappointed. The system is very simple, which is good. However, the only reason it can be that simple is the local climate. This type of cooling system would have a lot of trouble operating in nearly all of the U.S. The location in Oregon is unique because it has both relatively cool temperature and dry humidity extremes. At many other locations they would need some way to cool and dehumidify, which evaporative cooling cannot do. It could work in a hot and dry climate but you might end up using a LOT of water.
