Facebook's Server Room, Penthouse Cooling Caught On Video
1sockchuck writes "We've seen specifications and photos of Facebook's new data center in Oregon. Data Center Knowledge now has video tours of Facebook's server room and cooling system. The tours, conducted by Facebook Director of Datacenter Engineering Jay Park, showcase the Open Compute Project designs for servers, UPS units and two-tier 'penthouse' cooling system design."
Sadly, the video of Facebook's massive server array was not hosted on facebook's massive server array. Instead, it was hosted on a P3 600mhz with a rockin SCSI-II hard drive. Yay, progress.
Penthouse always made me hot.
I wont go there

I went there, it was full of hi-res penis.
now if only their software and application stack could run as efficiently as their data center to not require so many servers.
that's it, no mutilation, no old gay man, no goatsee ?
If so you Slashdot trolls are mellowing!

Well 1.5U is the idea I found most applicable to the kind of work I do. I really hate the compromises at 1U. 1.3U seems to be on the market too. Anybody here have experience ordering stuff via Alibaba? There are some cases available Stateside but it's mighty pricey.
My God, it's Full of Source!

this is such a waste of energy and resources ... for what? so that people can post pictures about their cat? and what happens when facebook goes the way of friendster? does this datacenter become a wasteland? how do you properly dispose of so much junk?
No. Then some other lucky company gets the deal of the century on a lightly used, modern datacenter.
Nothing to see here
Yes, it is actually a direct link to a video's hosting site (blip.tv) and not some URL shortened Goatse.

I wonder if anyone does an organic computation of the efficiency rate for operating these server farms.
I believe the operating costs (taking in risks factor as well) are too high for the actual benefits (for humankind) - much like nuclear plants. Why does mankind has to slave for machines that serves up imaginary values in their lives?
Why is it "caught" on video? Was it some elusive thing?

Buying from a country with fewer freedoms and labour protections than your own is morally equivalent to implementing those conditions in your own country. The moment this fact is codified in some legal principle, the world will be a much better place to live.
