Tribute To Steve Jobs: a 21km Apple Logo in Tokyo
An anonymous reader writes "To pay his tribute to Steve Jobs, Joseph Tame, a media producer and a marathon runner from Tokyo, ran 21 kms in 2 hours — starting from the western side of the Imperial Palace, across to Roppongi, through Omotesando, then up to Shinjuku. The leaf is in Kagurazaka, and the start/finish point just by the entrance to Yasukuni Shrine. The route, when mapped, shows the famous Apple logo in the center of Tokyo."

what what?
Looks suspiciously like the Apple logo. He's going to get sued for trademark violation...
a bit defensive aren't we? besides your OSX came from the same OSS cesspool
I have two of them. Had a 3rd one but the last one died prematurely.
So your "poverty" argument is just silly.
It's not that we refuse to "pay more", it's that we refuse to "get less".
It's a shame neither one of the survivors will run the new Civ or any older RTS games. They were kind of obsolete the day they were made (the Macs that is).

I know many people will bash this guy as "an Apple fanboi", or having "drunk the Kool-Aid®" (BTW, the Jonestown incident used Flavor Aid®, not Kool-Aid®, but don't let facts get in the way), but what those people are overlooking is that this is both clever and creative.
Side note: Creative people don't care whether or not you like or agree with their choice of tools. If you don't like Apple or Apple products, fine. But all the Apple, Apple product, and "fanboi" bashing is ridiculous. The company and products aren't perfect, but they are good and they do inspire creativity. They're tools that for many people make working easier, faster, and allow them to create. Nothing more, nothing less. And, no, I don't particularly care if you agree/disagree with this post.

Really, anything in this vein ought to at least "touch" Akibahara, no?
Don't feed the trolls, please.

I think you're getting running mixed up with Golf.
I thought New York was supposed to be the big apple.
will he be known as Steven Jobless?
Read between the lines. Jobs has authorized an official biography, codified management guidelines at the company for when he's gone, submitted his resignation, and has been photographed looking extremely thin. He has previously had cancer as well as as liver transplant. What do you think is likely to happen in the next six to twelve months?
have you seen this pic of him?

Was that a tribute to Steve Jobs as well?

We have to finally admit, that Apple is a cult. It has all the same traits as a religion. (No, there is no difference between a cult and a religion, other than perhaps the amount of penetration of the population).
This is not meant in a judging sense. Everyone does what he does, because he thinks it's good for him.
But especially with craziness like this, it is pretty obvious that it's actually rather harmful to them.
- The added price for what is still just cheap Foxconn stuff.
- The lock-in into the golden cage that China would be jealous of.
- The crippling of the own abilities through oversimplification. (Same thing Microsoft [MS Bob, Clippy, Office in general], Gnome [3, related: Unity], KDE and Mozilla are guilty of, in varying degrees..)
- The dumbing down that that crippling results in.
- The loss of resources like money earned and information gathered/processed that this inefficiency results in.
Apple products would clearly not be bought by any rational mind. They are emotional purchases. Dreams. Bloomy dreams with a bad reality. Schizotypic delusions. In other words: Religion/cult.
After posting his Apple logo-shaped tribute, Apple sued his employer "Mother Theresa Services for Homeless People" for unauthorized trademark usage.

I think it's just the dress that makes him look thin.
That guy must be thankful that Bill Gates isn't ill so he doesn't have to die trying to create the Microsoft logo.
WRONG! You are just a heretic and a blasphemer. Death to you and all the other infidels.
and a lot of drinking!
To pay his tribute to Steve Jobs,
The man who underpaid a business partner (Woz - he lied so he'd end up with more money in his pockets), a man who denied that his daughter born out of wedlock (Lisa) was his, who's business 'sense' claimed a production need on the Mac and Mac+ line needed 30,000+units when Apple sold less than 2000 in the same time period, who claimed the education market would move NeXT to #1 (channeling how education moved many Apple ]['s and missed Desktop publishing not to mention the Wall Street/NSA market for NeXT/NeXTSTEP)?
Tribute to a liar, an engineer who demonstrated a lack of understanding of thermal issues with the Apple /// and Mac (no cooling fans), and a guy who blew "what the market wanted" with the Apple ///, the Lisa, NeXT and statements about where the Mac's were gonna sell. THAT Steve Jobs?
Pull the other one - it has Newtons with color screens.
If someone does something you think is great, why not tell them ..before they die?
Snap out of it, people.
So what? Someone doesn't have to die before you honor them for their contributions. Love him or hate him, Steve has changed the industry, and it's appropriate to honor him at a time like this when he's stepping down from the role at which he made those changes.
...would have been if all Tokyans(sp?) disconnected their phone-calls at random throughout the day as a tribute to King Steve's mandate that a phone -- even one in it's 4th revision -- shouldn't have a founding principle of being able to maintain a phone simple connection.
Yeah, but have you seen how clear his thetan is?
The picture may well be a fake.
sig? Oh, that sig...
He'll attain divinity and ascend into heaven?
What do you think is likely to happen in the next six to twelve months?

OSX didn't come from a cesspool, it was intelligently designed!
I have a question, which I'm sure to get hate over but WTF it has always struck me as weird....why? I mean I could understand a Mac during the PPC days, there were some things that supposedly PPC ran better, no real worry about bugs because those were all written on X86, but now? now it is just a REALLY expensive Intel laptop. I haven't seen anything on one I couldn't get for cheaper with better specs.
The iPad, iPhone, and iPod? i don't have any of those but I GET IT, again non standard hardware with Apple UI equals win. The closest Android competitors frankly just haven't gotten the Apple smooth and seamless thing down. maybe by Android 6 they'll have it, but not yet. And while I love my sandisk frankly i'll be the first to admit that butt simple UI it ain't, nothing like an iPod. hell my mom could work one of those with no manual.
So I just don't GET it. Anybody who has the tech skills to read /. can follow a fucking google page and make a Hackentosh if they have a hard on for OSX that badly, and get better specs along with a free license for Windows for dual booting while they are at it. So why pay crazy Apple prices for less powerful hardware? i just don't see the appeal, unless you are one of those "keep up with the joneses" types that care more about flashing a label than anything. if that is the case fark is that way.-->

MacOS only impresses the ignorant. Get over it.

It doesn't have anything to do with "smooth". It's about getting basic core features right. Apple doesn't get basic core features right. If you use your phone for anything remotely "productive", you will likely find Apple's tendency to forget the power user a problem. Despite of all of the hype surrounding "Apple design", they can't quite seem to manage accommodating slightly less trivial use cases.
Entirely too many people buy into the idea that "Apple does it right" without actually bothering to check the basic facts of their assumption/

>He'll attain divinity and ascend into heaven?
There aren't even reports of his having made it to the castle yet, let alone having recovered the amulet.
Speculation as to ascension is premature.
Once he enters the planes, let us know, and we'll all watch live.
People bought his company's overpriced products. I'm sure that's all the thanks from the hoi poloi that matters to Steve.
Oh I'll be the first one to point out apple sucks ass for power users, BTW notice how I got modded down for daring to ask a question that consists of anything other than "gee, isn't apple like the best thing ever Skip?" but in this case i was talking about the "dad" factor, as in they make a phone simple enough my dad can use it without having to keep the manual in one hand.
I tried getting my dad a Droid phone but frankly he just couldn't get the hang of it, it would scroll crazy fast or too slow and we never could get a comfortable medium with it. His brother who is likewise clueless has an iPhone and it works perfectly for him, everything he would want to do with a phone is built in and is easy to manage.
Personally i told dad to wait for the nokia WinPhones to come out before we make any final choices. Everything he has is on Windows anyway, so if MSFT can get the integration between the WinPhone and Windows down hopefully it'll be a better fit.
That STILL doesn't change the fact the current Mac makes no damned sense. As I said in the PPC days one could argue that the combo of exotic hardware+software made for better performance in certain apps, but today all a Mac is is a VERY expensive Wintel box, with hardware that is outdated before it even reaches the shelves. By the time the Mac refresh hits the shelves there is usually at least one new generation of Intel chips, not to mention Intel IGP still blows nasty chunks. The base model Mac is an i5 with 2Gb for $1000? Are you kidding me? for INTEL graphics?
So I'm sorry I still don't get it. They have to be making 40%+ profits on old tech! It isn't like the old days where one needed an exotic CPU folks, these are Wintel laptops. If you want a non Windows OS so bad run Linux or build a Hackentosh and get better specs and a free Windows license.
