You Can't Bypass the UI Formerly Known As Metro On Windows 8

colinneagle writes with this excerpt from Network World: "The final build of Windows 8 has already leaked to torrent sites, which is giving the propellerheads a chance to dig through the code. One revelation will probably not sit well with enterprise customers: you can't bypass the don't-call-it-Metro UI. Normally, you have to boot Windows 8 and when the tiled desktop UI (formerly known as Metro) came up, you had to click on one of the boxes to launch Explorer. Prior builds of Windows 8 allowed the user to create a shortcut so you bypass Metro and go straight to the Explorer desktop. Rafael Rivera, co-author of the forthcoming Windows 8 Secrets, confirmed to Mary Jo Foley at ZDNet that Microsoft does indeed block the boot bypass routine from prior builds. He also believes that Microsoft has blocked the ability for administrators to use Group Policy to allow users to bypass the tiled startup screen. There had been hope that Microsoft would at least relent and let corporate users have a bypass, if only for compatibility's sake."

they have no choice, too poor for mac, too stupid for linux, i guess all your low class no taste retards are going to have to learn to love Metro!

You'll mod him down and probably quickly since the Slashdot userbase seems to have grown up very sheltered, so they have difficulty handling any kind of contention and anything more strongly worded than "no sir, I find it mildly distasteful, in my personal opinion, if that doesn't offend anyone, of course anyone else might like it and that would be perfectly valid". This crowd has difficulty seeing the meaning behind something that is not phrased in a 100% delicate manner and tend to knee-jerk and down-mod it.

That's too bad. Because there are lots and LOTS of users who fit the description of "too poor for mac, too stupid for linux". If a user is knowledgable enough to use Linux on his/her own without assistance, but they still prefer Windows, then and only then do they have a genuine preference. If they say they really like Windows but they don't know anything about Linux or how to use it, then their opinion is not valid because they have no basis for comparison. Now, to review, proudly touting an opinion that isn't actually valid at all is colloquially referred to as "stupid" with reason. It's just that simple.

    ...Windows 8.

There's UEFI for that! I mean, err, it's for your security. Of course.

Looks like this was modded down by an editor. Editors never specify a reason, they are above reason you know. They just use "-1 Overrated" for everything because they are more cowardly than any AC. I think also they recognize certain IP blocks and are biased against them.

So why was this modded down? There is legitimate fear the UEFI will restrict or at least limit users' ability to install whatever they want. Maybe it won't and I am sure lots of assurances are being made that it won't but you realize that's like gov't saying "no we won't abuse these shiny new surveillance and search powers we just received, trust us!"
