Hurricane Could Make a Mess of Republican Convention
Hugh Pickens writes "ABC News reports that Hurricane Isaac, currently a tropical storm brewing southeast of Puerto Rico, is on track to hit Florida the same day that Mitt Romney and 50,000 Republican delegates, journalists, protestors and guests descend on Tampa for the Republican National Convention but whether it will skim the east coast near Miami or crash head-on into Tampa, is still up in the air. The worst possible scenario is that Hurricane Isaac stays on the western track, skating over the Caribbean Sea south of Haiti, crossing the primarily flat landscape of western Cuba into the Gulf of Mexico then curving east and hitting Tampa dead-on. 'Tampa is just as vulnerable as New Orleans was in the sense that the water will funnel into the bay area and from the storm surge which will flood completely the whole entire city of Tampa,' says meteorologist Max Golembo. 'It would be a disaster in the Tampa area.' If a hurricane or tropical storm is bearing down on Tampa, the priority of law enforcement is to evacuate residents, leaving GOP officials to make the decision of when to evacuate delegates says Hillsborough County Emergency Management spokeswoman Holly Wade. 'We have to look at a lot of factors, like timing and landfall,' says Wade. 'We provide the weather information, then we take that to the host committee, which decides if the event goes on or if the event gets altered.' A Category 2 hurricane could disrupt convention activities because the Tampa Bay Times Forum, site of the festivities, is within a mandatory evacuation zone for storms of that magnitude."
"increased spending" being the key. It shouldn't be going up at all, especially from a man who said, "Adding 2 trillion to the debt is unpatriotic." Spending should have been frozen at 2008 levels (0% increase) until the budget deficit had fallen to zero.
As for filibustering, isn't it funny that the Democrats used the same tactic during the Clinton and Bush years? Why is it acceptable for the Dems to use the filibuster but evil for the Reps to use it? Hmmm.
BTW I'm libertarian. That means I'm on either party's side because I think the both suck. The Dems try to control my money ("we know better than you how to spend it") while the Reps try to control my sex life ("obey the bible or be damed"). It would be nice if we had a party like the one Jefferson founded in 1796 that didn't interfere at all, except to protect us from thieves and killers.
My AC stalker: " I personally agree with your posts most of the time, but that won't keep me from modding you troll"
The Republicans tried to pass reasonable spending bills multiple times.
The Democrats in the senate said no.
Same goes for many other bills, including far more reasonable health care bills that actually reduced costs instead of forcing all of America to buy the most expensive insurance policy the industry could dream up.
Every time, the Democrats said NO. Not on their watch, would costs be reduced or the budget balanced.
That's fine, just don't pretend it's Republicans that are blocking anything.

> GOP became the party of Filibuster in the Senate.
Exactly. When they became the minority they behaved pretty much indistinguishable from how the Ds behaved when they were in the minority. The only difference is because one side has the commanding heights of the culture/media the talking points change.
D's fillibuster: The fillibuster is a vital part of the checks and balances of power designed by the Founders. It protects the country from the momentary majorities by the forces of intolerance and bigotry when the voters fall for their lies for a brief time.
R's fillibuster: The forces of reaction are abusing our system to prevent the Glorious Leader's Five Year Plan and this anacronism needs to be removed. Heck it wasn't even the old racist white guys you rethuglicans worship who invented the damned thing anyway. First one didn't occur until 1837 and from 1917 to 1949 it required two thirds instead of the current three fifths so it isn't like it has never been adjusted and is holy writ or anything.
