Artificial Self-Healing Skin Can Sense Touch

thomst writes "Tim Wogan reports that chemical engineer Zhenan Bao of Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, and her team have increased the conductivity of a self-healing polymer by incorporating nickel atoms. The polymer they have produced is sensitive to applied forces like pressure and torsion (twisting) because such forces alter the distance between the nickel atoms, changing the electrical resistance of the polymer. Their work is published online in the November 1 issue of Nature Nanotechnology (abstract here, full article paywalled). Now Bao and her team are working on making the polymer more flexible."

I like how the summary includes an explanation of what torsion means. That was easily the most complex part of this article (piece of writing) so it was nice to have it put in layman's' terms.

First and foremost, you can disagree with the way the country is going and not be a racist. I don't dislike Obama, but I'm not thrilled with him. Really hate that Bush era policies continued under him, when he promised they wouldn't. I'm unhappy with drones coming to American streets. I'm unhappy with turning new laws giving the government the ability to detain without trial. I'm unhappy with they way they've been treating whistle blowers. I'm unhappy with the cronyism we see between Biden and the MPAA/RIAA. Taking MegaUpload offline was a fucking travesty of justice, and the people deserve an apology. In my decision to vote for Romney, race never even entered into the equation. It's extremely bigoted and narrow minded of your to blindly assume that anyone who voted for Romney is a racist. I'm sorry, but you suck for your intolerance.

It hadn't occurred to me that Conservative states would seriously ponder succession, but I hope they're successful with it. I do. Think about the scope of what's being talked about for a minute. They would need entirely new computer systems for everything. It would be like the joyous Y2k years all over again. All those high paying contracts, all the sense of urgency. That, and we all know what states would do with their independence. They would create ways for the people living in other states to hide from the IRS. If it happened (which I doubt) Texas would be the American Singapore. It would be a thing of beauty, really. I'm all for it.
