Ask Slashdot: How To Teach IT To Senior Management?
New submitter gagol writes "I recently took a position at a small industrial equipment manufacturer. We are looking to buy a new ERM software package and my boss, who is looking forward to buy the thing, knows nothing about computers or software. I will be providing basic IT training to the senior management and I am looking for your input on the scope and content of said training. I am thinking: basic components and architecture -> networking -> software -> proprietary vs open source. What do you think?"
1. Tell them their IT purchase decisions are infallible.
2. Tell them they can do no wrong. (They will think this already.)
3. Tell them they are truly gifted in making IT decisions, and the proof is how they made smart decisions in running the company.
4.. Tell them to hire another company to review their infallible decision, just to be on the safe side, and to give them cover if there are any problems.
5. Tell them to take full credit for the IT decisions they make, clearly making you the poor guy who has to go by the boss' decision...this provides you with cover when the decision backfires.
