Samsung Launches 3200x1800 Pixel ATIV Book 9 Plus Laptop

sfcrazy writes "As expected Samsung has updated its Ultrabook family giving direct competition to Apple's MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. When Apple launched its MacBook Air with 12 hours of battery life every one was looking at only one company to outdo Apple and that company was Samsung and the leading Android maker did not disappoint. With the launch of ATIV Book 9 Plus featuring:

* 256GB SSD (seems 128GB would be the base model)
* 3200x1800 resolution
* Touch Screen
* Haswell Processor
* 12 Hours battery life
* More 'standard' ports as compared to Apple's proprietary ports."

    I have noticed the Apple brand getting eroded in the market from a disparity in price. I see quite a few iPhone ads offering free iPhones with carrier plans (AT&T/Verizon) while the carriers still ask good money for a Samsung or Motorola Android device on the same data plan. If this were my brand I would want most consumers seeing my old designs being hocked off in troves for free while the competition is selling for at least two hundred dollars each. I think this would influence the customer to think that my product was "cheap." The opposite image of what Steve Jobs busted his ass to create. I give Apple five more years before they're getting bailed out by Microsoft again.

    I'm not sure how this resolution compares to the MacBook Pro 'retina' displays, but I agree with you that the resolution is the main weak point of the Airs. I was surprised they didn't introduce a retina version with this refresh cycle. That being said, no matter how good Samsung ( or whoever) hardware gets, it will always lack the single most important feature of the MacBook Air: OSX. As a person who after many years of playing with various unix and Linux distros decided that my work machine needed to be as hassle free as possible, I just couldn't tolerate having to use any current offering other than OSX. It's a sad state of affairs.

    Apple created Lightpeak, Apple then re-branded it Thunderbolt and own that trademark. Other companies can license Lightpeak but not Thunderbolt.

    Where it gets muddy is Thunderbolt peripherals. In theory they could be compatible with Lightpeak but if they are branded Thunderbolt it sort of implies that they are only for Apple products.
