FreeBSD Removes GCC From Default Base System

An anonymous reader writes "With the LLVM/Clang migration, FreeBSD developers have now disabled building GCC and the GNU C++ standard library (libstdc++) as part of the FreeBSD base system. GCC and libstdc++ have been superseded by LLVM's Clang and libc++, respectively, on primary architectures for FreeBSD 10.0." You can still flip a few switches to get GCC, but the system compiler will still be clang. Update: 09/11 14:50 GMT by U L : Reader Noryungi noted that the What's Cooking for FreeBSD 10 page is also worth a look, adding "I have to say, this is shaping up to be a very interesting release. Bhyve [the BSD hypervisor], in particular, sounds very promising."

I kindly ask that you no longer post "obligatory xkcd" comic links.

Xkcd comics just aren't funny. They also aren't particularly insightful or intellectual in any way.

At best, they merely make a reference to some computing, scientific or Internet topic. The rest of the time they tend to be non sequiturs.

Linking to them is just about as lame as when somebody quotes Family Guy or The Simpsons. Maybe it was worthy of a smirk the first time it was broadcast, but it is without intellectual and comical value after that.

It would be fine if you wanted to post a link to a comic that you yourself created as a response to this topic, for instance. But please spare us Randall's "comics". We don't want to see them, and we don't want to see "obligatory" links to them.

Don't bother replying to this with additional xkcd links. They will be ignored. Save your time and effort for something useful.
