Is it still possible to trust any commercial hardware routers or is 'roll your own' the only reasonable path going forward?" What do you do nowadays, if anything, to maintain your online privacy upstream of your own computer?

Commercial. You keep using that word. Remember that "commercial" can sometimes also be a guarantee that you do not get fucked: screw with your customers and that kind of company will soon be out of business.
