The Daily Harassment of Women In the Game Industry
An anonymous reader writes: Brianna Wu, leader of a game development studio, has an article exposing the constant harassment of women in the games industry. She says, "I'm not writing this piece to evoke your sympathy. I'm writing to share with you what prominent, successful women in the industry experience, in their own words." She goes through the individual stories of several women targeted by this vitriol, and tries to figure out why it happens. Quoting: "We live in a society that's sexist in ways it doesn't understand. One of the consequences is that men are extremely sensitive to being criticized by women. ... This is why women are socialized to carefully dance around these issues, disagreeing with men in an extremely gentle manner. Not because women are nicer creatures than men. But because our very survival can depend on it. ... Growing a thicker skin isn't the answer, nor is it a proper response. Listening, and making the industry safer for the existence of visible women is the best, and only, way forward."
It isn't only women who dance around issues when socializing with the other sex. Men gets very soft around women. If you think they have a harassing attitude you should see how men treat other men.

And her quote "But because our very survival can depend on it" ... really? Really?! Melodramatic, much? When's the last time a female developer was ever assaulted at work? And no, "nice ass" doesn't count as a threat to your life, though it is a crude remark (unless you're Tom Brady).

They have, and they've been leveled at you, by the article itself, which made blanket statements about all men.
This woman thinks I'm asshole with no self-control for no other reason than because I have a penis. And she thinks I'm the one who's sexist?!
Indeed. I have a suspicion that the opposite is also true: that the women who complain about these things are themselves the female equivalents of the condescending sexist assholes they're complaining about.

I'm really surprised that more women don't use the social norms and double standards to their advantage and take the opportunity to lash out. They might find that they even get some assistance with the beat down.

There are no Men in that industry. There are socially inept (ok, Retarded) losers who have only seen tits on the web and never in person. They live with their moms and think that talking shit to women will get them laid, despite their 35 years experience showing otherwise
Their entire self worth is dictated by FPS scores and the size of their monitors. They can code like hell but can't say hi to women in the hall.
They are overgrown freaks who lash out at the gender they know they will never, ever enjoy being inside.
Women wants only alpha males, period.
Almost all men are not alpha male, but instinct says "screw it, try anyway" with varying degrees of intensity ( depending on the education of the male can be from a polite "hello" to a rude "hi delicious").
Nowadays, if a non-alpha male approach a woman, she considers the approach as an act of aggression, regardless of what the male say ("hello" or "hi delicious"). Only a alpha male gets a friendly response.
Result: The educated males give up, and women end knowing only rudes because only rudes insist regardless of the response of women.

As a male developer, I often get sexual fanfic and photoshops of myself and the other developer on my team. Doesn't bother me. It's the stuff that I get in the mail(obviously homemade fleshlights, eww) and false calls to the police at 3 am that bother me.
I don't hear of women devs getting SWAT teams that might actually kill somebody.
So in other words the same thing every other developer also has to deal with, but because she's a woman instead of treating her as a full and complete human we're going to treat her like a special fragile snowflake?
A bullet may have your name on it but splash damage is addressed "To whom it may concern."
They'll just pick on whatever is different about you.
And by "different" you mean "different from a straight, cis, white man".
