Interview: Ask Christopher "moot" Poole About 4chan and Social Media

Having started 4chan when he was 15, Christopher Poole, better known as "moot", is indirectly responsible for almost every meme you've ever seen. The group "Anonymous" originated on 4chan and has since engaged in a number of well-publicized publicity stunts and distributed denial-of-service attacks. Thanks to users gaming the system, moot was famously voted the world's most influential person of 2008 in an open internet poll conducted by Time magazine. He is an advocate of online anonymity and speaks on the importance of privacy online to foster creativity and open discussion. moot has agreed to answer your questions about 4chan, social media, and privacy. As usual, ask as many as you'd like, but please, one per post.

Compared to other UGC sites (Reddit is one that gets brought up often, although Imgur is also a good ballpark comparison), 4chan gets rid of illegal content extremely quickly (measured in minutes) and sometimes preemptively. Part of this is because it is very difficult to hide content. Consider: on a board like /b/ with ten thousand users, all content on the board is squeezed onto less than 200 threads. Making a post bumps the thread to the top of the thread index and thus exposes the thread to more eyeballs. If you make a post with the "sage" option you will not bump the thread. Threads that are not bumped are automatically pruned. An unbumped thread on /b/ will expire in under 15 minutes. A bumped thread can live for a few hours, until it hits bump limit and begins sinking. If mods did absolutely nothing, all content on /b/ would be renewed in a few hours maximum. However, any posts of illegal content attract a flurry of posts, bumps, eyeballs, and, thankfully, reports. Illegal reports are prioritized in the reports queue (the details of which I will omit to prevent abuse). Yes, users do in fact report illegal content on /b/.

Any child pornography removed from 4chan is forwarded to the NCMEC (moot said this in his Reddit AMA), so you'd have to be a naive fool to think you could get away with posting CP on 4chan for more than the few minutes it takes for users to see it, report you, and for mods to ban your filthy ass permanently.

There used to be a system that would automatically ban users for attempting to post blacklisted images (based on hashes). It is simple to circumvent (change a pixel), but would automatically permaban users who tried to re-post illegal content. This may have been retired due to false positives, actually, but the point remains.

Lastly, and most importantly, 4chan has been in operation for over 10 years now. It's older than Facebook. The IP permaban list has never stopped growing. I double-dog-dare you to find a proxy that isn't banned from 4chan. Tor exit nodes are banned. ISPs are banned. Countries are banned. Most of these bans are for child pornography.
