Ceres' Mystery Bright Dots May Have Volcanic Origin
astroengine writes As NASA's Dawn mission slowly spirals in on its dwarf planet target, Ceres' alien landscape is becoming sharper by the day. And, at a distance of only 29,000 miles (46,000 kilometers), the robotic spacecraft has revealed multiple bright patches on the surface, but one of the brightest spots has revealed a dimmer bright patch right next door. "Ceres' bright spot can now be seen to have a companion of lesser brightness, but apparently in the same basin," said Chris Russell, of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and principal investigator for the Dawn mission. "This may be pointing to a volcano-like origin of the spots, but we will have to wait for better resolution before we can make such geologic interpretations."
It all started when our overrated adventurer, Cockslut, woke up in a haunted thicket. It was the eighth time it had happened. Feeling exceedingly concerned, Cockslut poked a banana, thinking it would make her feel better (but as usual, it did not). A few unfulfilled decades later, she realized that her beloved Pussy was missing! Immediately she called her so-called friend, Cum dumpster. Cockslut had known Cum dumpster for (plus or minus) 61 years, the majority of which were enticing ones. Cum dumpster was unique. She was outgoing though sometimes a little... funny-smelling. Cockslut called her anyway, for the situation was urgent.
Cum dumpster picked up to a very sad Cockslut. Cum dumpster calmly assured her that most legless puppies yawn before mating, yet disease-carrying chipmunks usually explosively yawn *after* mating. She had no idea what that meant; she was only concerned with distracting Cockslut. Why was Cum dumpster trying to distract Cockslut? Because she had snuck out from Cockslut's with the Pussy only two days prior. It was a enticing little Pussy... how could she resist?
It didn't take long before Cockslut got back to the subject at hand: her Pussy. Cum dumpster sighed. Relunctantly, Cum dumpster invited her over, assuring her they'd find the Pussy. Cockslut grabbed her hammock and disembarked immediately. After hanging up the phone, Cum dumpster realized that she was in trouble. She had to find a place to hide the Pussy and she had to do it skillfully. She figured that if Cockslut took the wannabe go-fast Civic, she had take at least five minutes before Cockslut would get there. But if she took the Cocksleeve? Then Cum dumpster would be barely screwed.
Before she could come up with any reasonable ideas, Cum dumpster was interrupted by eight annoying Creamy_squirts that were lured by her Pussy. Cum dumpster panicked; 'Not again', she thought. Feeling stunned, she aptly reached for her banana and skillfully deflowered every last one of them. Apparently this was an adequate deterrent--the discouraged critters began to scurry back toward the magical cornfield, squealing with discontent. She exhaled with relief. That's when she heard the Cocksleeve rolling up. It was Cockslut.
As she pulled up, she felt a sense of urgency. She had had to make an unscheduled stop at Big Lots to pick up a 12-pack of dull pencils, so she knew she was running late. With a hasty leap, Cockslut was out of the Cocksleeve and went indiscriminately jaunting toward Cum dumpster's front door. Meanwhile inside, Cum dumpster was panicking. Not thinking, she tossed the Pussy into a box of carrots and then slid the box behind her elephant. Cum dumpster was angered but at least the Pussy was concealed. The doorbell rang.
'Come in,' Cum dumpster wildly purred. With a quick push, Cockslut opened the door. 'Sorry for being late, but I was being chased by some stupid social outcast in a rice rocket,' she lied. 'It's fine,' Cum dumpster assured her. Cockslut took a seat wonderfully far from where Cum dumpster had hidden the Pussy. Cum dumpster shuddered trying unsuccessfully to hide her nervousness. 'Uhh, can I get you anything?' she blurted. But Cockslut was distracted. Duly ecstatic about the looming crises, Cum dumpster noticed a funny-smelling look on Cockslut's face. Cockslut slowly opened her mouth to speak.
'...What's that smell?'
Cum dumpster felt a stabbing pain in her fingernail when Cockslut asked this. In a moment of disbelief, she realized that she had hidden the Pussy right by her oscillating fan. 'Wh-what? I don't smell anything..!' A lie. A stupid look started to form on Cockslut's face. She turned to notice a box that seemed clearly out of place. 'Th-th-those are just my grandma's live hand grenades from when she used to have pet albino cats. She, uh...dropped 'em by here earlier'. Cockslut nodded with fake ack

Then why don't you, and save us the mindless speculation? Can't you mentally masturbate in private for a few more days?
an ill wind that blows no good
The space sharks are trying to destroy Dawn before it can get too close to image their civilization.
I'm 222 years old and as far as I'm concerned Ceres is still a planet.
Shouldn't we wait until the probe actually arrives and gets details before speculating?
There are bright spots on Ganymede (Jupiter moon) that are probably from meteors smashing into its icy surface.
Even our moon has Tycho crater which is surrounded with bright dust due to the recency of the impact. (Radiation tends to darken soil and rocks over time.) Volcano claims are premature.

Perhaps it is the correct time to remind people that in the plasma laboratory, current-carrying filaments tend to exhibit both long-range attraction and short-range repulsion. Setting the scientific framework's needs aside for a moment, that would seem to point more logically to an electrical inference. Note that we see a similar dipolar structure at the poles of Venus as well.
The key test will be to observe whether or not they rotate around one another.
If they do, then it's time for Slashdot to end its ban on the electric discharge machining inference.
That's no dwarf planet.

I do believe you have won the comments section for this article ;). Thanks to everyone else for playing!
Getting serious for a moment - and making a prediction of my own, what you're witnessing in the picture is the creation of a "bullseye" crater, with electrical machining. it's an electrical phenomena. We can discount the volcanism straight away. Where's the ash clouds? someone take some temperature readings, please! You'll see "saturated" responses, because it'll be off the charts, and we'll be left speculating. it's off the charts, because it's the kind of temperatures you'd see with lightning. Sounds crazy, but so does every theory, until it's taught as fact.
If we all woke up to what alternative thinking on the universe has been telling us for quite some time, we wouldn't have a lost century in the understanding of our universe, and we could stop wasting so much research grants on finding pixie dust in the cosmos.

Cool - what has alternative thinking been telling us? I think I missed that memo. Does it involve tin foil in any way?
I do not want your cheap brainburning drugs. They are useless for work. And I am a working man today.

When I was younger, I remember reading a sci-fi novel about aliens in our solar system who were overseeing mankind's growth.
The aliens chose their base on Ceres because the asteroid field offered nigh-unlimited resources outside the confines of a gravity well, because Ceres had water for living and powering fusion engines, and because it was far enough away from earth to stay out of sight.
While those two white spots *could* be an example of cryovolcanism, I think that we can all agree that ancient abandoned alien city is really the more likely choice ;-)
