Maker Person Rich Olson Returns (Video)
In February we ran a video titled Rich Olson Embodies the Spirit of the Maker Movement. We aren't saying Rich is a superman, but more like everyman or, in this case, everymaker. He is a hobbyist who, like many others, shares his designs freely in the best spirit of open source. Today we have some more words from Rich that may help you if you are just starting to use a 3-D printer and similar tools either at home or in a makerspace. and a note: If you know someone we should interview, please email robinATroblimoDOTCOM.
Eat shit and die DICE
I love auto play videos. It's so much trouble clicking the play button myself. I'm sure all my coworkers appreciated the first 5 seconds of that video.
I agree, if these guys were competent they would be called "Engineers".
Disrupt, 3D print change. Quick, to the hackerspace!!
Not super concerned about strength, you can make a bolt that would not be useful for anything a bolt would be used for.
That does indeed embody the maker movement. Bored man children making future garbage.
LOL it is easy to be a brofessional when you have a few hundred million dollars of equipment at your disposal, a team to check your working, a project which is more about minimising cost and risk than being adventurous, and the knowledge that you actually get paid for your work.
All the most difficult things I've done have been in my spare time. For example, I am a radio amateur - all that "amateur" means there is that I'm not restricted by commercial imperatives. I can still apply the knowledge I've gained from academic and professional experience. The most interesting developments don't come from the "professional" but from intelligent people interested in their trade. I've seen EE grads who get the job based on acing college-style quizzes but who can barely work with a soldering iron - they're good for the grunt work, but the last people I want giving creative input.
I'm gay, and agree with this.
I am a Maker that has an Engineering degree- electrical to be precise. WUT NOW!
Ever changed a tire or oil on your car? Fixed a door hinge in your house? Are you a fucking licensed mechanic or construction worker?
Non-engineers can also do things, get down from your high horse.

I'm just sad for you that you don't know how to create things by yourself and must always rely on others.
No flash on my system, works fine in Safari on OS X.

What was done with the faggot matt shepard should be applied to all faggots. There is no such thing as gay rights because gay = wrong.
I'm not gay, and I am sickened by the childishness and childish hate in your response.
1) hanging some poor kid on a barbed wire fence is wrong, period. A real man walks away from
people he finds offensive. There is nearly always no need to engage in violence and a real man
knows that violence is the last resort.
2) Gay guys being honest and open means more women for straight guys. It also means fewer
guys having children because gay men cannot get pregnant. Fewer children means the world
will be less crowded. These are all benefits.
3) You may well be gay yourself. Often those who worry about "gays" are secretly fighting urges
within themselves. As a heterosexual man I never worry about gays of either sex, though I
can say I'd like to have a threesome with a couple of bisexual lesbians sometime.
If I wanted to run an OS that Flash didn't work well on, I'd at least have the decency to run a real unix like NetBSD.
It's your hobby, or it's your job. That's all. People have always made things. You're not bringing about any sort of social change. Your prototype looks ridiculous, and everyone is laughing at you.
Anyone who puts a cash value on their time is living such a miserable existence that I can only feel sorry for them. Even at my wealthiest, when I was earning $17,000/month with a few hours of work a week (lol dotcom boom), I didn't once think about putting a dollar value on my free time - I just did whatever I enjoyed, taking as long as it took to do it well, and trying not to be a dick in the process.
You're the kind of person who can't understand a game of association football ("soccer") between friends because OMG what a waste of time kicking a ball around getting sweaty who PROFITS? - who can't make sense of a sunset because gosh I can reproduce those hues on my LCD without having to turn my neck to look out the window at that inefficient, primitive ball of gas. Of course things made in a factory and/or by hard labour are cheaper, you silly dullard. Hell, from an economic PoV, the cheapest possible existence for a human body is achieved in death. But economics doesn't give us a point to life - like you, it's just a tool.
