Ask Slashdot: Can You Disable Windows 10's Privacy-Invading Features?
An anonymous reader writes: I really want to upgrade to Windows 10, but have begun seeing stories come out about the new Terms and how they affect your privacy. It looks like the default Windows 10 system puts copies of your data out on the "cloud", gives your passwords out, and targets advertising to you. The main reason I am looking to upgrade is that Bitlocker is not available on Windows 7 Pro, but is on Windows 10 Pro, and Microsoft no longer offers Anytime Upgrades to Windows 7 Ultimate. However, I don't want to give away my privacy for security. The other option is to wait until October to see what the Windows 10 Enterprise version offers, but it may not be available through retail. Are the privacy minded Slashdot readers not going with Windows 10?

Anybody telling you Windows is as good as Linux is lying to you. Cyberspace is all Linux right now. Slashdot runs on Linux, www.microsoft.com runs on Linux, www.apple.com runs on Linux, the international space station runs on Linux, governments run on Linux, Amazon, Google, all the billions of dollars of supercomputers worldwide run on Linux. None of what I just said runs on Apple or Windows. Why? Linux is way better. Of course Linux will run your games better too if game companies got off their knees for Microsoft and compiled their games for Linux. Windows is garbage. I'm sure people have invented cuss words thanks to Windows.
When you buy a PC, Linux should already be on it. At the least dual-bootable and already installled. The natural flight to quality will be to Linux. Surely your router is already Linux. If you're smart, your phone is probably Android (which is Linux).
Anybody who lies to you saying Windows desktop is good at all... is a stupid person when it comes to computers. All of those categories I listed above have intelligent people that did the operating system choosing when they set up their systems. eg. check top500.org

^This article is legit. openSUSE is awesome with KDE desktop (it's the default choice) and packman repositories. I'd second pick Debian because it is just damn stable and everything works. Then Arch and Mint.. after that it's just messing around. Avoid Ubuntu and Redhat/Fedora

If you want to try out a bunch of types... just put them in VM's. All of this is free. Any Linux will give you more functionality (all for free) than all Windows "Home/Pro/retarded" editions combined since Windows 3.1

You can also just grab a live cd version like http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html and burn it to a DVD if you've never used Linux before. Reboot with the DVD in and you will have a Read-Only Linux install to check out right away. If you do, I suggest the booting with the toram switch so it all loads into RAM and won't have to keep accessing the DVD. You interrupt the boot with space bar or whatever it is now... then type knoppix toram then press enter.

The retarded argument that "ya linux is good for servers but i just want to get shit done so its windows on my desktop"... is retarded. You have an extreme amount of extra functionality (MORE SOFTWARE) even on a default vanilla install of Linux than you get with Windows. A lot of it is there on a Mac since Mac OS X is BSD, but it's just set up stupid.

Windows is weak. I know because I have used them all for so long. ALL. (except BeOS and Windows Millenium because the weak was too strong for me to ever consider using.)

Windows 10 is being given away so it can screw us with privacy, imitate steam for software management (was only a good idea because Valve was a good company compared to Microsoft) and other things, which installation options wont protect us from int he long run. If we had any brains we would crowdfund linux and GNU/FSF and even the EFF to have a operating system that gives us everything we want via functionality and interface, without any of Microsoft's control and invasion... but instead we dismiss linux and its advocates and such with slurs like "freetard" or "SJW" or "fedora" or "PC". We Americans are so great at destroying our alternatives in a free society via stereotypes and slurs that cause us to choose against our best interests. We hijack our brains with this garbage, but we never are able to use stereotypes against the right-wing internet bullies who create these slurs that attack us for being geeks, nerds or fans. We never use our genius to fight back. We are cowards.
