Fantastic Four Reboot Released To Tepid Reception
An anonymous reader writes: Another month, another superhero movie based on the Marvel universe. Today marked the release of Fantastic Four, an attempt to reboot a film franchise that did poorly in the theaters as recently as 2007. This isn't the same crew that's been pushing out blockbuster after blockbuster, though — it's the crew that keeps releasing mediocre X-Men flicks. From early reviews, it looks like we can expect to see another reboot in 2025. Rolling Stone calls it "the cinematic equivalent of malware," saying that even a solid cast of actors couldn't save it from failure. A.V. Club says it "struggles to fill out its relatively brief runtime," the NY Times says even its special effects aren't up to snuff. Metacritic shows rare agreement between fans (27/100) and critics (2.7/10), and it does just as poorly on Rotten Tomatoes. Even director Josh Trank seemed to have a problem with the film. Those who have seen it, what did you think?

Mole Man. Wizard. Blastaar. There are plenty of big villains. Why keep rehashing Doom and doing it wrong?
No one likes your crappy reimaginings.
If you don't have riveting hero(s), you darned well better have an awesome presentation.
Iron Man is kind of interesting. Batman's cool. Spiderman even, and many of the X-Men. The general public will usually risk those.
But when you start getting into "WHO?" territory, like Guardians of the Galaxy or the upcoming Deadpool, you need an incredible presentation to draw attention. GotG had that. Deadpool looks like it's going to be great. Point is, the further you stray from well-known characters into comic culture, you need a movie so cool that people who don't care about the characters will find it interesting. I still only know GotG as "Starlord, Groot, the funny raccoon, green Zoe Saldana and some red guy. But I'd pay to watch a sequel in a heartbeat.
I don't see F4 having that... zing.
"Oh no... he found the
I'm looking forward to is Blade Runner. The wifey and I went and saw Mad Max: Fury Road and it was a blazing disappointment. Nothing but CGI, unlike the original three. Movies from the late 70s and early 80s are generally my favourites, including animated films like Secret of Nimh, Heavy Metal, etc. Does anything ever really touch Raiders of the Lost Ark?
I want to see movies with zero CGI. It's not needed unless the movie is based on stuff that doesn't exist, like the Transformers. Road Warrior had zero CGI and was a brilliant movie. Still is.
Aside from new movies, all the time, there are so many shows on television: Gotham, Super Girl, Flash, Arrow, Agent Carter, Agents of Shield, Daredevil. I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot.
As a kid, I read comic books. At first, it was fun seeing the super heroes come to life. Now it's getting tiresome.
Also, does every other movie have to be a re-boot of the origin story?
Okay, I'll admit I don't really know my Fantastic Four from my League of Superfriends, or whatever, but the main impression I was left with from the trailer was how they seem to have shoe-horned the black guy into the cast.
I guess the world just isn't ready for a black Reed Richards (him being the leader, and all), and a black Thing would probably be racist, or something? And I guess having the other two (who are siblings) both be black was just stretching credulity too far. Nope, better make the sister adopted.
systemd is Roko's Basilisk.
Mar should sue Sony for degrading their IP and tarnishing the Marvel brand.
Yo Hoolywood makes too many remakes o' da same movies ova an' ova. dey should creeate some original content. dey could even peep ta foreign markets fo' ideas sho 'nuff! Yo we's don' need uh Fantastic Four 10!
And mean that interesting new ideas don't get used instead. Many of the amazing SF novels of the past 20 years are crying out for filming, but Holywood is obsessed by SF = special effects and VIOLENCE. 'Red Shirts' as a movie anyone?

and give the $10 I could have spent on another reboot to the homeless guy I buy breakfast for every few days.

The people/studio with the rights to the Fantastic Four films, if I recall correctly, are legally obliged to bang out a Fantastic Four movie every few years in order to keep said rights. One of the earliest ones was filmed, the actors were out promoting it, only later to find that the studio had no intention of ever releasing it in the first place...probably just as well as the bits and pieces of it that have been shown online looked as dull as the current iterations.
The major studios are swimming in superhero movie money at this point, yet the Fantastic Four seems like utter box-office poison...it's not by coincidence. They're just trying to hold onto a property until they know what to do with it, hedging their bets in the hopes that owning the rights to the characters will pay off for them later, somehow. In the meantime, expect an utterly shitty "reboot" every few years until they either give up or the superhero movie fad dies out...neither of which appears to be close to happening soon.
I got a couple of free tickets for a pre-screening of the new FF4 movie. I enjoy pretty much any of the comic book movies, but this one was pretty sad. The story line and the characters were cliche and contrived. Nothing about the characters of the story was believable, and the science was beyond bad. Ya gotta wonder who the moron was that wrote this story and the morons who approved it.
Even Catwoman was better. How much better? It has Halle Berry in a skin-tight leather outfit with kitty ears going "Rowwerrr!" And she's a lady who has a butt and knows what to do with it. With character development like that, who needs to remember the story line? There was a story line there, wasn't there?
Rowwerr!!!!
Kate Mara is cute enough, but she definitely ain't no Halle Berry.
4.1 on IMDb, so, no, I'm not going to watch this.
Slashdot, fix the reply notifications... You won't get away with it...
What made the original watchable was the delectable Jessica Alba. It was the only movie she ever appeared nekkid in. (Although her being invisible at the time kind of took away from the moment. :P )
I do not fail; I succeed at finding out what does not work.
I don't care about any of these movies. All I know is that Deadpool is apparently the second coming of Jesus Christ.
Only the State obtains its revenue by coercion. - Murray Rothbard
"Powerfully mediocre" "Terrifically mediocre" "Decidedly mediocre" "Aggressively mediocre" "Stunningly mediocre".
I went and saw it anyway.
I deserve this ache in my wallet.
This has been a test. If this had been an actual Sig, you would have been amused.
The same fuckers around here who also claim that they're never going to buy from company X, Y or Z because of some blah blah blah are the first morons to fork over their bucks to Hollywood time after unsatisfying time.
If you morons had brain one in your heads you would have boycotted Hollywood shit films after the Superman film with Richard Pryor...
I guess you faggots just can't stop sucking that Hollywood dick.
People complain all the time that all Hollywood puts out is the same crap year after year. There's so many comments on there about how terrible the reboots are and that there are so many superhero movies that they are getting tired of them. The movie industry is only putting out those movies because people keep going to those movies. When it takes $100M or more to make a movie are you going to do something that you are pretty sure that people are going to see or take a risk?
If you want to see well written, well acted, and just plain great movies then we are going to have to stop going to see the crap we're being fed and only support the few gems do get out.
and paid too much.
simply tired of freaking reboots.
Why is a Youtube link to movieblob modded to +4, Insightful here? What the hell /.
Prior to the whole shitstorm that happened and his videos favoring certain demographics of internet dwellers, he actually had some really good insight into movies, and I found that I generally agreed with him. Recently, its more political ramblings of someone who has zero self-awareness.
OP here. I put this up because, in the past, I've found Moviebob's reviews to be fairly reasonable evaluations of comic book movies. Even if I disagreed with them, it seemed he could often at least explain his positions so I could understand them and make my own decisions. His YouTube videos have become more rant-y and curse-y, but I figured that was due mostly to lack of editorial oversight.
I knew Moviebob had been let go from "The Escapist", but I don't know the whole story. I admit I wasn't following things too closely, as I just went for the movie reviews and such. If you can post some summaries explaining why Moviebob is now persona non grata, I'd be pleased to read them and educate myself.
I'll take Redlettermedia's Half in the Bag over moviebob any day.
Anorexia chick, one gay white guy, one Africanized gay white guy and a CGI rock.
I am glad that I can mock the friend who paid for us to see this excrement and I will do so for a very long time. ;)
I'd go on a Vegan diet but the delivery time from Vega is too long. --brownkitty
You faggots just don't like it because it has a nigger playing the role of a character that was historically a member of the white patriarchy. I demand that president Obama, through executive action, mandate that everyone in the United States watch this movie. It is the only way we can end racism. This executive action does not apply if you are an undocumented alien, because the laws of the USA, even the illegal ones, do not apply to you.
"Days of Future Past" was far better than most of the marvel-kids-movies (looking at you, cap2, thor2 & guardians of the galaxy) they released over the last years. which doesn't mean that f4 isn't a turd, which it probably is, judging by the trailer.
I thought the new one was FF3+N.
Why can't they make new original content instead of regurgitating the same stories over and over?
Remakes, reboots, Prequels, etc.
It's like they are stuck in a loop.
While success is desirable, all the companies that signed deals with Marvell are required to make a movie every few years to avoid the movie rights reverting back to Marvell.
We saw this same thing happen with the Sony reboot of Spiderman. It was cheaper to make a couple of terrible films than to have the rights revert back to Disney where Sony would never get a chance at the intellectual property again.
This movie was doomed the minute they cast an African-American as Johnny Storm.
Let's See:
Nick Fury
Perry White
Iris West
Jimmy Olsen
Johnny Storm
Wally West
All of the above formerly as white as pure Canadian snow, are now negros.
I've probably missed a few, but the Hollywood SJWs are bound and determined to to diversify the entire Silver Age of Comics.
What I was hinting at was that he chose a side in GamerGate that I dont agree with. The lack of self-awareness is that the same stereotypes and insults he slings against other people fit him all too well. I knew that he was Anti-GG when the whole shitstorm started, but I didn't care, I still watched his videos because I liked his reviews. Then he did a review for Blackhat, where he brings up GamerGate (without actually bringing it up, we know what he is talking about) and just slams them for no reason.
At that point, I lost all respect for him and his opinion.
I prefer the original, to some reboot. Batman, never liked it...grew up on the original version. Beverly Hillbillies. Same (plus the movie version was lame). Oceans 11.....come on, really? NO ONE can replace the rat pack! The 10 commandments.....LOL, like anyone could replace Charles Heston Hollywood is LAZY. They go for cheapest hoping to get profit. Instead of investing in a good script, they try to rewrite an older script, and throw in a bunch of stupid CGI, and explosions. They use so much gasoline to produce explosions, I bet it causes the price of gas to go up! Then, you want us to pay the super expensive prices for the movie, when we can wait a few months, and get it on Netflix, Hulu, Redbox?
For the older generation: They've already long known exactly who and what the Fantastic Four are supposed to be. For the younger generation: They only know what they've seen in movies, so it's already too late to make the Fantastic Four be so different from what they were since the 1960s... they were already a recent movie (2005)! The stupidest part is, they don't even revise the name any: Fantastic Four, Total Recall, Robocop, Godzilla. This new FF is so different, that they could've given the new movie ANY name regardless!
Thanks for the info. I don't know enough, or was involved enough, with any part of GG to have any opinion either way, so I'm still figuring out what's what after the fact.
The whole thing is a shitstorm, and while I say that I'm Pro-GG, it really doesnt have that much meaning. Its two completely different sites yelling at eachother, but having different conversations. One side is pushing for ethics in games journalism and fighting out the SJW clique that has taken over the games journalism, and the other side is screaming its a harassment campaign. If you visit any place that is Pro-GG, you will find out quickly that harassment is not tolerated. Pro-GG sites (outside of the mess that is 8chan's GGRevolt, which are a bunch of people that just start shit for no reason) tend to very quickly come down on people that are trying to harass others and flood reports, whether it be on Twitter, Reddit, or any other site.
The problem is that both sides can be pretty petty and handle things like little kids. I tend to just dislike Anti-GG because they always tend to be a certain type of person (typically males with crushing white guilt and a hate of nerds/geeks/gamers)
this makes no sense.
... who saw the new Fantastic Four movie agree: "It's clobberin' time!"
I haven't seen the new FF flick - mostly out of protest to reboots and to the other FF films that were terribly horrible.
What I don't understand is how the writers keep pulling the same villains. There have been 6 Superman films (yes, I try not to think about the Return one) and there are, basically, only two villains: Lex Luthor and General Zod (and company):
I: Lex Luthor directly
II: Zod & Co. + Luthor
III: Luthor employee (Luthor indirectly)
IV: Luthor
Return: Luthor reboot
Steel: Zod & Co.
Out of the entire Action comics universe, that's all you've got? Really?!?
Malware? Don't they mean shovelware?
Why did we even want or need another fantastic 4 movie? It's only been about 7-8 years since the last F4 movie and that was a pretty decent movie! So why re-make something that was decent into a steaming pile of crap?!?
What is wrong with Hollywood?
