The Medical Research Council reports: "The new findings, which used the first analyses of genetic data from participants in UK Biobank, may one day help scientists develop better treatments for diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a collection of life-threatening lung disorders affecting almost one million people in the UK. The findings could also help improve interventions aimed at helping smokers to give up."

The anti-smoking hysteria long ago became a moral issue, not a scientific one. It started out as a medical issue, but has since morphed into a Holy Crusade. That's why smoking ban policies almost always include e-cigarettes too, even though there is no evidence that they pose any medical danger to anyone. E-cigs are seen as part of the immorality of the practice of smoking itself.
