FCC Clarifies: It's Legal To Hack Your Router (betanews.com)
Mark Wilson writes with an update to an earlier report that the wording of new FCC regulations could mean that it would be illegal to modfiy the software running on wireless routers by installing alternative firmwares. Instead, The commission has now acknowledged that there was more than a little confusion from people who believed that manufacturers would be encouraged to prevent router modifications. The FCC wants to make it clear that most router hacking is fine and will remain fine. With a few exceptions, that is. In a blog post entitled Clearing the Air on Wi-Fi Software Updates, Julius Knapp from the FCC tries to clear up any misunderstandings that may exist.
Sure. I'm glad to know what the intention of the rule is, but isn't it still likely that the easiest way for manufacturers to comply will be total lockdown?

Words mean absolutely nothing. What matters is force and power. I mean when the planned parenthood can with a straight face say they were not selling human body parts, they were just exchanging them for money, and when people can with a straight face say the second amendment does not protect the individuals right to bear arms, and instead allows the state to arm itself, and when the president can with a straight face say he is not making a treaty with Iran, and instead making an agreement with Iran, I have absolutely no faith whatsoever in what the FCC says. What matters is what actually happens. I bet that in a year from now you will have less ability to modify your router. Oh of coarse the laws / regulations outlawing such modifications will be labeled the internet and home appliance freedom act of 2016. They will include grand sounding words such as freedom, but in the end it will increase their power and lesson you ability to control you own devices.
