New Campaign Features Internet Trolls On Roadside Billboards (bbc.com)

An anonymous reader writes: A campaign taking shape in Brazil seeks to fight online harassment in an unusual way: by posting the abusive comments on real billboards. "The group collects comments from Facebook or Twitter and uses geolocation tools to find out where the people who have posted them live. They then buy billboard space nearby and post the comments in huge letters, although names and photos are pixelated." Brazil has laws prohibiting racial abuse, but this group doesn't think the government is doing enough to stop it. The campaign's founder said, "Those people [who post abuse online] think they can sit in the comfort of their homes and do whatever they want on the internet. We don't let that happen. They can't hide from us, we will find them."

At what point do people need to take responsibility for their actions or words?

I was under the impression that being a minor was not permission to misbehave, but is a state where the punishments for misbehaving are less than for an adult since a minor is still theoretically learning. The crux is that the minor still needs to be punished so that they learn that there are indeed consequences for their actions.

This seems like a fairly mild form of social shaming. People generally have fairly short attention spans, this will be forgotten by most people outside of the subject and possibly the subject's immediate circle, but the subject will probably have a fairly lasting memory of the event and maybe will change behavior on account of it.

Stop overprotecting minors from the consequences of their actions. When you overprotect them and don't force them to suffer minor consequences for their bad behavior then they reach adulthood still engaging in those bad behaviors until they run afoul of the law and now suffer much more severe consequences as adults than they ever would have suffered as minors.

I've noticed this about a strong contingent of liberals; they seem to have an irrational notion that people just need to be exposed to their liberal values and have "the truth" explained to them by someone who knows what's best for them, and they'll magically convert to their way of thinking. It's the same on the conservative side too, and you especially see it with religious people. I got it just a couple days ago here in some discussion about religion; some religious people who "know what's best" telling me that the "truth" is obvious and my mind is simply "closed" to it, or that contraception is evil and I just need to read some Latin text from the Vatican and I'll understand everything.

In this case, rather than doxing this seems more like trying to say there are what happens on the internet isn't just limited to the internet, and there are real meatspace implications for it. Whether that is successful or not is another question, but the intent doesn't seem to be the same as doxing somebody.

Also keep in mind that I don't believe anything you say, so if you decide that you want to post fake messages from him denying our communication, save your typing, I'm not going to believe it anyway. If he wants to contact me then he can email me. You've proven yourself to be a liar more than once, I have no reason to believe anything you say. I haven't proven anything one way or the other, but you have definitively proven that you are willing to lie to help advance your agenda. You did that when you denied ever having multiple accounts on any other forum (like Ars), and you continue to do it whenever you make another anonymous post here where you refer to yourself in the third person as if it is someone else posting. You have no idea how transparent that stuff is, it is blatantly obvious when I am reading a message from you regardless of whether or not you sign it. You don't know how obvious and transparent you look to everyone else. As a piece of evidence to support that, every single message I've seen from someone taking your side in an argument with either myself or Coren is posted anonymously, during the same time frame when you are posting, I have never once seen any established registered account post anything even remotely similar to the "third-party" posts that you make, taking your side in one of the stupid arguments that you like to continue. It's all you, everyone knows it, and you continue to deny it. That's a lie, you are clearly willing to lie to advance your agenda.

Like I said, I do not care if you believe me or not. What I care about is getting your spam off of Slashdot. Clearly you like it here because there is no way for you to get banned like you have from several other forums over the past 15 years, which is why you always and only post anonymously, so literally the only thing I can do is try to get the people that you cite to stop recommending or hosting your programs. It is literally the only thing I can do to try and lower your spam. You're obviously completely unwilling to simply stop spamming Slashdot, in fact you seem almost compelled to continue doing it, so that is literally the only option I have if I want to see you stop spamming. I've contacted Slashdot as well but I'm not expecting any response from them, I didn't seriously expect them to target the keywords you use in your spam and add those to a comment filter. It would be nice, but I didn't realistically expect anything from the current owners. The option I have left is to communicate with the people who recommend or host your software in order to inform them about how you choose to behave. But you can prove it easily enough for yourself by sending an email to Steve and asking him. You aren't going to do that though, because (ironically enough) you probably don't want to spam him, and you also don't want proof that we're in contact because then all of your claims about me lying about it will be proven wrong.

I'll challenge you though, you can prove yourself right. It's very easy. Send an email to Steve and ask him if I have contacted him regarding your posts on Slashdot. Go ahead. You don't need to post his response here, just as long as you know the answer.

And, Alex, keep in mind. Between you and I, only one of us is a proven liar, and it's not me.

You seem to have overlooked this in my previous post, please answer this question:

Answer this question: do you make anonymous posts here on Slashdot while posing as a third-party to support the other posts you make?

I'll even refine that question further. Did you post comments 51006275 and 51007995? Here are their contents:

There's only 1 way to pull that off and he said it. You trolls just can't manage it. I think it's hilarious.

There's only 1 way to pull that off. Apk said it. You trolls can't manage it (validly proving apk technically wrong). It's hilarious.

You seriously think that posting things like that leads people to believe that this is actually someone other than you chiming in just to support your position? Talk about hilarious, that's it. You're clearly a liar, Alex. But, go ahead, maybe if you call me a bullshit artist or blowhard a few more times then you'll begin to believe that you aren't a hypocritical liar and blowhard yourself. I'm reminded of the far-right conservatives in the news who are the most vehement anti-guy spokespeople around, when it eventually comes out that they are having sex with gay prostitutes on the side. That reminds me of you, you're so quick to call everyone else a liar, bullshit artist, blowhard, etc, and I think I know the reason why you do that.

And by "starting shit", you mean "trying to get you stop spamming Slashdot"? That's my 1 goal here. I've said that numerous times. Why do you insist on being a spammer?

I do know MY WARE'S STILL THERE

I have not asked him to remove your listing. I have also not emailed him since last week. I'm not making a concerted effort to have your software removed from his site, I am simply looking for your spam and reporting it to him when I see it. If you stop spamming, fine, we won't have any problems. Like I said, that is my goal.

you wonder WHY guys like me do well where you don't & never will?

APK, who in their right might aspires to be a spammer like you? Only a sociopath looks at your behavior and thinks "wow, that's what I want to do". You're right, I do not do well spamming, and I never will. You're exactly right about that. You're much better at spamming and trolling than I am, I admit it. What I do well at is making a 6-figure salary with my computer science degree, and I'm also pretty good at making and keeping a strong group of actual friends. I suppose that's how I live with myself. It's pretty easy when you're surrounded by people who genuinely care about you where the feeling is mutual.

I note that you still have not responded to my direct questions on whether or not you pose as people other than yourself here on Slashdot. The omission speaks volumes.

Yes, you can. You're more or less free to use this site as you like, and you take full advantage of that by always posting anonymously so that you can't be banned, etc. However, what you do that no one else does is post your giant wall of text upwards of 10 times in the same article as people down-mod it. Other people don't go around posting unwanted full page advertisements repeatedly, while taunting those who down-mod it. That is called spamming, and you're the only regular spammer here.

Call me ALL the names you like but ANYONE can see who is doing the trolling crap here & it's NOT me!

I don't call you names. I call you a spammer, because as a point of fact you are one. I call you a troll, because as a point of fact you are one. That's not name-calling, that's calling a spade a spade. The reason I refer you as a man-child is because you are a 50 year old with the emotional maturity of a 12 year old.

As for you, time permitting, I'm going to continue doing what I already told you I was going to do. As you continue spamming, so I will continue reporting your spam to the people whose reputations you use to promote your product. If they decide to take action based on those reports, so be it. If they don't, and they ask me to stop reporting it to them, then I'll stop. Otherwise, I'll continue to report it and I'll encourage others to do the same.
