FOSS Force is a FOSS News and Commentary Site (Video)

Christine Hall is FOSS Force's founder, publisher, chief editor, and everything else. She started the site about five years ago, but it has only started to attract notice in the last year. Christine brings the cynicism and writing style of a long-time freelance journalist to this tech niche, which makes her site a welcome addition to the Open Source news pantheon. And on the Slashdot front: this is our first video in a while because we have switched video hosting services. We hope you like this host better than the last one. Native HTML 5 at (long) last. Yay!

One day, I hope Slashdot figures out that not everybody wants video, and especially not autoplaying video.
Either stop the autoplay, make it possible in the setting to choose not to see threads with video, or both.

  We understand that running 3 videos/week out of a total of 100+ stories/week is an affront to your dignity, but autoplay? Are you sure? It is NOT supposed to autoplay, and it doesn't autoplay for me in Linux or Windows, Chrome or Firefox. Hmm... I didn't try Explorer. Nope. No autoplay in Explorer, either. Could you please tell us what browser and OS you're running?

  The reason he isn't responding is because he can't come up with a lie that sounds plausible. Video doesn't autoplay for me on aindroir, ubuntu, windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10, using firefox, chrome, ie, edge, or safari. I haven't tried opera, or that other one there.

  Content that could easily be in writing is annoying in video. Some of us are at work with videos blocked, or on mobile with strict data caps. Forcing us to watch mutlimegabytes of video for some content that could have been a few k of text IS an affront.

  I can - and have - found many things that annoy me about Slashdot, but the mere presence of occasional posts which contain a video is not one of them. They are easy to identify and ignore, should you so choose.

  It appears to me that the video is (unsuccessfully) trying to autoplay. This is using Firefox 43.0 on a fairly recently updated Ubuntu 14.04, set to not remember history (this may be the difference).

  Imagine Slashdot was a modern website coded after 1991 and could deal with images and there's a screenshot of the story with something that says "invalid player authorization" or something here.

  This javascript is in the source code for the page:
  Bolt.getPlayer('playerwrapper').autoplay
  If that's not actually turning on autoplay, that's dumb way for someone to write code.

  user since '99 (Even registered at some point, been an AC since '05 long story... )
  I think the main problem is the video content is poor.
  Generally speaking: There is no editing, it is almost always shot "potato-cam" style or utterly egregious quality. The audio is often poor quality.
  And most importantly, the content isn't really anything that suits video.
  Video is perfect medium for showing me something that can't be said as fast as it can be shown or for something where the visual component adds a richness of depth of information (emotion, facial expression etc.).
  I don't mind the videos.
  That said, I don't watch them either. I always read the comments to see if there is anything interesting.
  I'm the kind of person who watches youtube videos all day long, and I actually produce video for work.
  If you're up for a small challenge, I've got a few suggestions on simple production / content solutions if you're interested.

  I'd just like Slashdot to stick around, and I think branching out can be successful if done right.

  The transcript that's revealed when you click the "Hide/Show Transcript" link. Try a different browser if your browser doesn't show it to you. The transcript text even includes this line: "Because you know, that’s how it is, in the world of publishing, we need to have time to make a transcript for those of you who would rather read than watch and listen."
