What Spotlighting Harassment In Astronomy Means
StartsWithABang writes: Geoff Marcy. Tim Slater. Christian Ott. And a great many more who are just waiting to be publicly exposed for what they've done (and in many cases, are still doing). Does it mean that astronomy has a harassment problem? Of course it does, but that's not the real story. The real story is that, for the first time, an entire academic field is recognizing a widespread problem, taking steps to change its policies, and is beginning to support the victims, rather than the senior, more famous, more prestigious perpetrators. Astronomy is the just start; hopefully physics, computer science, engineering, philosophy and economics are next.
From one of the articles cited:
"harassment, defined as unwelcome conduct that is based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability or genetic information."
That's not how most sane, non-SJW's define it. "Unwelcome conduct" can be literally ANY conduct, is purely subjective, and is completely out of the control of the "perpetrator."
SJW's don't eliminate discrimination. They just expropriate it for themselves.
" Do you really hope this issue is widespread?"
For SJWs, the worse the problem, the better for them. An SJW would commit suicide in a world without a white/christian/male/heterosexual/capitalist/non-transgender patriarchy to oppress them to death every single day.
Jupiter cries they get fat shamed, Uranus is the butt of every joke, Mars is offended because people refer to it by the color of its atmosphere, Venus has gender issues and insists it was born a male planet, Pluto has a size complex, and everything orbits your mom.
Mostly it seems to be a bunch of guys whining they can't act like ignorant douchebags without consequences.
If by "ignorant douchebags" you mean "like normal humans" than you're pretty much spot on.
One of the astronomers in that list was punished for realizing he had emotional feelings about a student and telling her to go seek another adviser. You know, because men aren't allowed to have emotions. Also, at the same time, are too emotionless compared to women, and that's why diversity is important. In the world according to the SJW.
No the world is divided into people who stand for their principals and people who hypocritically pay lip service to principals. Anti-sjw people aren't against actual social justice, just the useless posturing and twisting of social justice causes to create a new caste system. A social justice warrior doesn't actually advance the cause of social justice. You simply have been mislead as to the meaning of the word. Look up it's origins sometime. The term was created by the left to call out their hypocrisy.
An SJW is someone who perceives* an injustice, and tries to fix it with more injustice.
*I specifically chose to use "perceive" because it could be imagined, or it could actually be a real injustice that really does need something done about it. Whether or not the injustice is real isn't what makes an SJW, it's their proposed solution that is the deciding factor. Because you don't fix injustice by throwing more injustice at it.
This!
Of course, this is why it is so hard to argue against SJWs. Their cause may be just, so they can always accuse one of not supporting a just cause when one really just doesn't support the solutions or tactics.
In what way were the student's feelings disregarded? The adviser wanted to protect her, and eliminate the chance of non-consensual contact between the two. He just wanted to live his life, without having to deal with "you can't have* her" every week.
The biggest thing I hate about SJWs is that they only look at the world from their own (female, and mostly speaking with female victims of sexual harrassment, not with men) perspective. What should he have done if he had such feelings? Quit his job? Ignore his feelings, every week, because men have to be strong? Here, that's a stereotype.
As far as I can tell, SJW is a doublespeak term meaning "joylessly intolerant finacialist running dog lackey elite stormtrooper of hate".
The clique of people who self-describe as SJW on the Internet rarely espouse anything remotely resembling justice, and are invariably antisocial and aggressive.
No they didn't. That's the problem. Given this is largely a CS crowd, they don't think sexual harassment is a problem. Lot of nerds in need of a swirly.
the world is divided into raging fanatics who want a nicer world,
Fuck you. SJWs don't want a "nicer world", they want a world where they get to jump down anybody's throat, get them fired or ruin their careers for any imagined slight, no matter how trivial or ridiculous it may be.

The only title of honor that a tyrant can grant is "Enemy of the State."
Clearly. What differentiates the SJWs from normal people is the assumption the accuser is always telling the truth, feelings are more important than facts, and sanctions should be imposed without all that time-consuming due process stuff.
Excluded middle aside, most SJWs want the right to act as much like assholes - or more so - than the people they perceive as assholes and whom they're attacking.
Making a nicer world is largely a cover story.
Confucius say, "Find worm in apple - bad. Find half a worm - worse."
You are way off base, and didn't answer my question. Again You were told no,stop. You continue, you are harassing the person. Period end of story. If you don't like that truth too bad really, tell it to the judge and jury. or maybe you need to read just what i was replying to in the manner i did to a statement someone else made..either way, your wrong.
Jack of all trades, master of none
And that's a real problem with the SJW approach to dealing with what they define as harassment, it's seriously damaging the ability to teach. It's so difficult, meaning risky, for a guy to mentor female students, that some have just given up ("Look at the evil sexist, he won't take female students!"). When you can't ever close your office door for a quiet discussion and have to have a chaperone present at a private research meeting because of what might get said about it later, you're creating a toxic environment for everyone. Sure, there's a problem with harassment (it's present everywhere), but creating the thoughtcrime environment the SJWs want isn't the answer.
