Microsoft Leaks New HoloLens Details (mashable.com)
New submitter moriarty1972 writes: More details about Microsoft's HoloLens have come out. The device will offer roughly five to five and a half hours of battery life when working on Word documents or email, and about two and a half hours when using it for highly intensive computational work involving detailed renderings. Mashable reports: "Microsoft's augmented reality headset called the HoloLens has already won over a number of fans eager to try the device, but details about how it works have been scarce However, a few more bits of information about the HoloLens leaked during a recent event in Tel Aviv, Israel, courtesy of Bruce Harris, a technical evangelist at Microsoft."
But MS puts spyware in everything. Won't buy.
All these glossy demos, but still no-one's stuck a camera in it to show us what it actually looks like from the inside.

I'm wouldn't be surprised if it was a fake "leak" orchestrated by Microsoft deliberately.
People talking about the Oculus Rift and Google Cardboard and they gotta do something to make themselves look relevant still.
aren't they just jumping on the vr headset bandwagon with too little (vaporware) too late?
Xbox TWO should use a VR headset and have some spatial sensing using the kenect as well. That way they can force the next purchase of video game console easily.
I love playing games like Rainbow 6, but If I could have it VR and hold a plastic rifle in my hands to aim/shoot with? oh hell yeah I would drop 2X Xbox One money and $80 per game to do that.
Or Play forza from a real VR view? oh hell yeah.
Do not look at laser with remaining good eye.
I thought Google was crazy charging $1500 for Glass.
the information was released by Microsoft, not leaked.
Anons need not reply. Questions end with a question mark.
Leaks
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Slashdot social media options: AIM, ICQ, Yahoo, Jabber and Mobile Text. Why no MySpace?
That kind of battery life is unacceptable. If you can't do at least 6 hours of "intense" use, it ain't worth buying.
press release without a Q&A?
so, can we dance in the moonlight with this hololens? aw, that's right, Moonlight is no longer in development. what a surprise. i knew it from the beginning.
oh, and fuck zune.
Field of View has been stated as "equivalent of a 15" monitor at 2 feet". Ergo, quite small. Immersive, it is not.
Thirty four characters live here.
It's bound to be the Holol. The Holol!
It's a public announcement by a Microsoft employee at a public event. It's not a fucking leak. FUUUUUCK!
Slashdot, stop saying "leaks" when it isn't. Sick of seeing public relations dressed up like this parroted by Slashdot. We're not morons. We see through this shit. Stop insulting our intelligence.
The pic in the link makes them look like medium tinted sunglasses. I wouldn't want to look though that for any long period of time. Augmented reality that makes reality dim kind of sucks. I'd rather smoke a joint and drink a six pack and call it a day.
$3000 unless something changed as far as I know it was $3000 and only approved devs that had access to the device. "Go to the Manhattan store and buy yours" this is the first I've heard of it, and last I heard of it was ~ last week.
Finally what the heck is the point of listing the word document battery life? Do people really think that their companies SWOT analysis doc is going to be improved by holographic projection?
will it require windows 10?
> working on Word documents...
If it's taking you more than 6 hours of "intense" use to finish off in one setting, dial back the lotion, man. A bit of friction is a good thing, and helps accelerate the process a bit. And if you're going to rub it out multiple times to get to your 6+ hours, at least grab a snack and walk out side a bit between sessions. (put your pants back on first, though...)
Go ahead and mod this rant off topic, I'm out of shits to give today. I had to spend 20 minutes writing this out to burn off the rage I built up so I could go back to what I was doing before I had to spend an hour on the phone helping my mother (who I love dearly and can not rage at). And then I had to find a slashdot article so I could post this where it would be at least tangentially related to whatever was being discussed so that everyone else can witness what complete and utter fail Microsoft has become.
FIX. YOUR. GODDAMN. SHIT. MICROSOFT!
Do not turn your fucking broken shit back on UNTIL YOU FIX IT. I had better shit to do with my evening then try to talk my mother through the services control panel (with the screen flashing black and closing every window and menu every 3 seconds!) to turn off YOUR SHIT which YOU TURNED BACK ON in this last update after I disabled the service at Christmas.
Thank God the run prompt still has "msconfig" left over from when we ran it then. Do you have any idea how hard it is to type when you've got only a second or so to click in the box and type a few letters before it all disappears again, using a trackpad? Got to the services tab, got the services sorted by name and the Windows Error Reporting Service is unchecked, but is running anyway. WHAT THE FUCK IS A DISABLED SERVICE DOING RUNNING?
Oh joy! After 30 minutes of trying to get my mother to type "services.msc" really fast she finally got into the services control panel and when she tries to stop the service (that she has confirmed is set to Manual start (it was Disabled when I left) and is not a dependency of any other service so FUCK YOU for starting it automatically on boot!), she gets an error that the service can't be stopped. FUCK. YOU.
I ended up spending another 30 minutes trying to get to some way to run services.msc as administrator so we can disable the service while hoping to God that Microsoft hadn't fucked that shit up too. Couldn't use the start menu to right click services.msc, couldn't use the file explorer to right click services.msc. Finally managed to get the secret menu (Win+X) open and my mom fast enough to click the admin command prompt so we could run services.msc as administrator (at least the command prompt doesn't close itself when the shell crashes and restarts).
So we finally got the damn Reporting Service shut off so shit stops blinking, and decide it's time to remove Windows 10. Except apparently if it's been more than a month, Microsoft removes the option to downgrade. I guess they figure if they sucker you into thinking they'll stop shitting up your computer for a month, you won't miss windows 8 when it's gone.
I guess I'll hear back once Microsoft decides to un-disable the service AGAIN and fuck her laptop up AGAIN.
Thanks, Microsoft. So now I've wasted over an hour of my weekend on your complete bullshit. Windows 10 is clearly not ready for the desktop and I sincerely doubt it will ever be.
If I have been able to see further than others, it is because I bought a pair of binoculars.
Microsoft told me this during the public demos they gave out a few months back. This isn't secret information.
BTW it's awesome and really works--it has a low FOV, but you kind of forget about it. One question I couldn't get answered....is it running Windows RT? It's the only way I figure they can get that much battery life out of Windows on a chipset that fits in a headset.

Is it really a leak if Microsoft PR sends the details to be released out, just with the caveat "you didn't get this from us"?
Sleep your way to a whiter smile...date a dentist!
That's ample time to cover the initial setup and playing around with demos until buyer's remorse kicks in. And when you find it again in 6 months in the cupboard it will have some charge left so you can confirm to yourself it really was the stupidest thing you've bought of late.
But VR is now a trendy thing. Business management does not invent anything, they just copy the things other have done and try to squeeze money out of it. It is no wonder, that all the tech companies play with smartwatches and self driving cars at same time.
What exactly does it do in those scenarios? I don't know why you would even want to do that.
Twinstiq, game news
Have you tried YouTube? They actually did this at a conference with minecraft
I was able to try out HoloLens at last year's MS Build conference. The FOV is a bit bigger than 15" @ 2' . I would say it's more like 23" to 25".
Immersive it is not. Useful? I think so. Basically this isn't a VR headset like the marketing leads people to believe. It is more of an augmented reality like a better version of Google Glass. I can think of many things it would be very good at.
To be honest though with the head tracking it is more a cross between a VR headset and augmented reality headset. It does a bit of both but I think its strength will be the augmented reality side of things.
I see videos of solid 3D models composited onto a live camera view using similar technology, but what I have yet to see is what it actually looks like to a human wearing the thing - i.e., according to accounts I've read, transparent and occupying only a small area of your field of view.
