ZDNet Writer Downplays Windows 10's Phoning-Home Habits
jones_supa writes: Gordon F. Kelly of Forbes whipped up a frenzy over Windows 10 when a Voat user found out in a little experiment that the operating system phones home thousands of times a day. ZDNet's Ed Bott has written a follow-up where he points out how the experiment should not be taken too dramatically. 602 connection attempts were to 192.168.1.255 using UDP port 137, which means local NetBIOS broadcasts. Another 630 were DNS requests. Next up was 1,619 dropped connection attempts to address 94.245.121.253, which is a Microsoft Teredo server. The list goes on with NTP, random HTTP requests, and various cloud hosts which probably are reached by UWP apps. He summarizes by saying that a lot of connections are not at all about telemetry. However, what kind of telemetry and data-mined information Windows specifically sends still remains largely a mystery; hopefully curious people will do analysis on the operating system and network traffic sent by it.
You're just adding more FUD. There's no proof that Windows sends info about visiting websites, persons e-mailed, listened songs or watched movies.
"Windows 7: The BEST Windows, EVER" since he was on the inside & KNEW what was coming - sheer stupidity VISTA onward...
* I hate to say this - I truly TRULY do, since doing primarily MS related work since 1994 professionally made me have a fairly decent life... but to see them F'ING UP the way they are now? Makes me sad...
I absolutely HATE seeing good things go BAD/corrupt... be it good people, good companies, or good products.
I may not "get along the greatest" with whom I mention in my subject line ("had it out" a couple times over the years) but, he would be a GOOD solid TECHNICAL LEADER (with business background having run his own before) to take the reins @ MS imo... better than Ballmer or Satya Nadella imo.
Tech companies NEED solid tech leaders... it goes with the territory.

P.S.=> I mean, it's pretty SIMPLE from a marketing perspective really - which is what BLOWS MY MIND they've allowed it! To wit: You don't give people what they DON'T want, you give them what they WANT! They're not doing it, & folks are getting wise to it - & they wonder WHY they're not doing well? WTF - Fire present management - blindmen @ the wheel! I am honestly amazed that stockholders have put up with it (Oh, they create "illusions" of FAKE "growth" by having ruined stock value per share, possibly intentionally I suspect, to do "corporate buyback" (fake as hell - mere tricks on books, not REAL growth)). IF they DO "turn it around", concentrating on FUNDAMENTALS like security? Then, they'll have an EXPLOSIVE growth again & guess who bought back MOST of the stock via those 'corporate buybacks'? You guess it - beware of that kind of TRICKY SNEAK in power... they fuck you, LONG term... & they ARE BAD BUSINESS! apk
