San Bernardino Police: Reasonably Good Chance Nothing Of Value On Shooter's iPhone (businessinsider.com)
San Bernardino police chief, Jarrod Burguan, who was part of the investigation into the two shooters who killed 14 during a mass shooting event last December, says there probably isn't any useful information on Syed Farook's government-issued phone. "I'll be honest with you, I think there is a reasonably good chance that there is nothing of any value on the phone," Burguan said. Burguan is siding with the FBI, though, which is seeking to compel Apple to build custom software to allow law enforcement to extract data from Farook's phone. "This is an effort to leave no stone unturned in the investigation," Burguan told NPR. "To allow this phone to sit there, and not make an effort to get the information or the data that may be inside of that phone is simply not fair to the victims or the families."
They already know there is nothing on it but selfies but they want to get people used to the idea of 'Feds' extracting data from people's iPhones, or else just give would-be terr'ists the idea that their data is secure, when Apple has in fact implemented a backdoor years ago
So, no expectation of information of any value. But to be fair to the victims families, Apple should potentially delay their next iOS launch, which will impact the iPhone and iPad launch schedules, by diverting Apple resources to create a one time use (by court order limited to that phone) and expend 100s of thousands of dollars. With the expectation of not finding anything useful.
Even if there's no worthwhile information, the phone is still of immense value to those who want to take what's left of our privacy. You know, the same people who have us taking off our shoes in airports, in a security theatre exercise that would be farcical if it wasn't doing such a good job of making compliance with authoritarian demands a knee-jerk reflex among the citizenry.
'The Economy' is a giant Ponzi scheme whose most pitiable suckers are the youngest among us and the yet-unborn.
Why is it "not fair"?
You know who did it.
You know why they did it.
You know that they are now dead.
Why would it be more "fair" to the families of the victims to destroy the security of everyone using an iPhone?
And yes, the tech would leak out. And be abused. Today "terrorists" and tomorrow everyone.

Liberty - Security - Laziness - Pick any two.
Post some of last year's news next. Also, this still hasn't got anything to do with technology.
I'm not an iPhone user so I thought I'd ask. Wouldn't Apple have to push out an update to this phone to implement what the FBI wants - unlimited password attempts w/o bricking the phone? If so, can this absolutely be done w/o the owner's consent? It seems that I can disable auto-updates on my Android phone and/or restrict updates to be over WiFi only - both of which would require manual intervention to initiate.
It must have been something you assimilated. . . .
NOTHING will help the dead or their families. Playing that card is craven and crass.
"Transparent" is a shit show that trades on every stereotype going. A man in drag is NOT a transsexual.
Your shift key's sticking, bro.
But if they don't open up that phone we'll never find out who shot all those people!
In order to update the device Firmware, It has to be done in Device Firmware Upgrade Mode, which requires physical access to the phone, via the lightning port.
It's not something thatr can be done over the air.
Apple (as I'm sure all smartphone manufacturers) have this capability so that they can recover bricked/locked/returned phones, and phones in for service or refurbishment.
It was government issued and the government didn't know the password?
WTF
Stop watching crime shows, it is bad for you...and they are not real.
The news media has overlooked the Ten Immutable Laws of Security: Law #3 - "If a bad guy has unrestricted physical access to your computer, it's not your computer anymore." This law applies equally to the good guys. The FBI has physical access to the phone and the memory chips inside it. Decryption of the data is just a matter of time and money.
Sour Grapes.
It's a reality show. They want to find the nations ugliest woman. If everyone gets voted off, they can claim that they left no crone unspurned.
"Be sure to drink your Ovaltine"
...as exciting as watching Geraldo Rivera opening Al Capone's vault!
There's no evidence the phone is evidence. But the FBI decided it must be decrypted at all costs anyway; I wonder why? Finding incriminating communiques might reveal a silent partner but will loudly expose mass surveillance and terrorist-finding algorithms as a massive failure.
Being fair ensures more evidence will make the victims feel less bullet-ridden and less dead. He's saying that he (and the FBI) do this because that's what good guys do. What he's doing is changing the point of police oppression from "Look, terrorist!" to "Won't someone please think of the (victim's) children".
And here I was, thinking the phone was running iOS8 - which handles the encryption differently from previous version. IE Apple used to have the key available (created and associated to specific phone at manufacture, by them and could thus simply decode anything on it.
From iOS8 that is no longer true, the user selected key is required and there is protections in place prevent simple brute forcingit (10 false tries and the phone gets wiped. Apple is being asked to write an OS/tool that can be pushed to the phone (and a fair pile of others waiting) that would remove that protection. They're also asked to implement a feature so that keys can be tried by machine (electronically rather than via the screen input) so that keys can be tested faster.
Not for a one off data dump off this phone to be done in Apples lab, but a tool for the Feds to use as they see fit. Pretty interesting look at it (lab work vs tool) : http://www.zdziarski.com/blog/?p=5645
It was an iPhone 5C, running iOS9. Different license agreement.
Exactly! And since Farook took special pains to destroy his own PERSONAL iPhone, but did nothing to his WORK iPhone, I am confident that if the FBI ever does get into the phone, they'll find nothing in it except the San Bernardino Department of Health roster of phone numbers (some of which will be out of date) and records of calls that he had made to his clients and co-workers.
And perhaps some text messages like "Mrs. Jones wants to reschedule your 3 o'clock appointment for next week".
I am confused. Is he siding with the FBI?
"This is an effort to leave no stone unturned in the investigation," Burguan told NPR. "To allow this phone to sit there, and not make an effort to get the information or the data that may be inside of that phone is simply not fair to the victims or the families."
The FBI are refusing to do any attempt to unlock the phone, except for demanding a backdoor into all iPhones. How is that leaving no stone unturned or even making an effort? How are those statements arguments against Apple, but not against the FBI? Apple has even given FBI information on how to get this data which the FBI are ignoring.
People still think this request has ANYTHING to do with what is on that particular phone.
That's kinda the point; or to be precise, the best lies hold grains of truth. So the shows 'NCIS', 'Law & order' and 'CSI' use the insignificant truths to feed you the big lies, like:: How home-made bombs work, how easy it is to collect evidence, how police evidence always identifies the criminal, how the police are the good guys, how good guys are allowed to be criminals, "if you've done nothing wrong, you've got nothing to fear", "prove your innocence". A true fan of any of these shows is a fool who thinks the police are there for his benefit.
Everything about this convo is crass and insulting to anyone with 1/2 a brain not shoved up their ass.
Law enforcement and mass surveillance. Fuck the police and fuck the US government. Bunch of self serving fascists. The USA is working hard at becoming the world's biggest asshole in every way imaginable.
Oh, and if any Trump supporters out there are welcome to eat a bullet in place of casting a vote. Selfish, self-serving fucks that they are.
Lady justice is blind for a reason: blind for short term emotions...
The court order is not compelling Apple to custom build any software.... that is what Apple claims and keeps repeating in the press. You do not need to rewrite an operating sytem to by-pass password encryption. Apple knows this and keeps repeating the "back door" lie
