Volcano Erupts In Southwest Alaska, Sending Ash 20,000 Feet (google.com)
USA Today reports that according to the U.S. Geological Survey, the Pavlov Volcano, "about 600 miles southwest of Anchorage, erupted at 4:18 p.m. local time. The agency says the eruption also led to tremors on the ground. ... The USGS has raised the volcano alert level to "Warning" and the aviation warning to 'Red.'" Television station KTUU of Anchorage has a few photos of the emerging ash plume, which has so far risen to about 20,000 feet (hence that aviation warning).
I think I felt those tremors in the ground and I live in Knik. (Near Wasilla and across the bay from Anchorage.)
Thought it was the start of an earthquake but apparently it was a volcano.
How do you pronounce "ÃoeWarningÃ"?
Confucius say, "Find worm in apple - bad. Find half a worm - worse."
And that's 6km for us in the rest of the world using international / SI standard.
Both Palin and Putin can see it from their houses.

Did someone ring a bell?
âoeWarningâ?
Fucking hell Whipslash, remember when you proudly exclaimed that there were no longer any non-native English speakers on the Slashdot editorial team?
Fuck us for believing you.
There are just fewer people posting in general. But you'll need more evidence that there's been a large drop in comments since whiplash took over the site. I think it's more likely that comments have been declining for the past decade, long before whiplash got involved. It was common to see articles on the front page with 200-300 comments, something that's far more rare now. Of those, probably 20-25% were trolls posting or being modded to -1, something that has declined markedly. I'd venture a guess that commenting is particularly low right now because Easter Sunday is just coming to an end, and a lot of people probably spent the day with their families and not on Slashdot. I also think that logged in users left in significant numbers starting 10-15 years ago and continuing through the present. It seems like many of the users I used to interact with stopped posting around 2004-2006, something that the current crew can't be blamed for. Limits on how often users can post have also become stricter, so there are probably fewer posts being made. There's also a lot more competition from other blogs and some sites like Reddit. If you want Slashdot to be a lively place again, perhaps you should post how you think it should be done rather than simply posting a flame directed at the new overlords.
That's a local word, right? I don't know what it means but it sounds bad!
It is pretty isolated, being 1000 km from anywhere.
According to Wikipedia it's spelled Pavlof. It's located pretty far out on the Alaska Peninsula.
So THAT'S why my dogs suddenly started salivating!
I bet she *can* see that from her front porch.
Fuck Whiplash, just look at the number of articles with less than 20 posts.
Maybe listening to the whinging minority wasn't the greatest of ideas, eh? But hey, you are an 'entrepreneur', so I guess it's not your money that's is being pissed at the wall.

Soot and ash drive global cooling, until they fall on the ice
"You're right," Fisheye says. "I should have set it on 'whip' or 'chop.'"
Alaskans could tell it was the Pavlov Volcano because all of their dogs started drooling.

pretty well put. we now have https with utf-8 supposedly in the works so at least the site is coming up to date with current technologies.
there are a lot fewer social "justice" stories these days which is a lot nicer. those pretty much dropped to 0 a week or two after the current overlords took control. i don't mind them every now and then. tech does have diversity issues but unfortunately people in tech can do little at best about it. anybody who really wants to learning computing can. my usual advice is to grab a ruby or python install, learn vim, and run through a linux from scratch. there's not much i can do if certain demographics can't be arsed to do that even when i'm personally available to answer questions and offer guidance. it's true though that social "justice" stories were one of the big comment attracters.
i'm honestly not sure if letting us acs post willy nilly is a good idea. on the other hand, we have one ac who is obviously using a botnet/vpn/tor/etc to post entire conversations with himself usually about how republicans hate children but he's had some variety lately at least. the only restriction i've run into while logged in is that i have to wait 5 minutes between clicking reply and clicking submit.
no idea if slashdot will ever be what it once was again.
Whoever figured out how to train a volcano to erupt in a pavlovian style just saved the world. That ash will lower global temperature and fight warming!

The number of AC's increasing on SLASHDOT. People frequenting here are above average IQ. Join the dots. You should have known better who's to be blamed.
"Falling from the Sky." Mayday. Season 4 Episode 2
Actually it's a small blast since this same volcano has sent plumes over twice that far in the relatively recent past. This guy is a very active volcano if not the most active one in the Aleutian islands.

There is also APK who would shitpost whole torrents of spam. It seems he has mostly backed off recently though.
APK likes to ask for responses to the same things over and over. Maybe he just likes the responses?
