13-Year-Old Linux Dispute Returns As SCO Files New Appeal (theinquirer.net)

An anonymous reader quotes a report from THE INQUIRER: Now-defunct Unix vendor, which claimed that Linux infringed its intellectual property and sought as much as $5 billion in compensation from IBM, has filed notice of yet another appeal in the 13-year-old dispute. The appeal comes after a ruling at the end of February when SCO's arguments claiming intellectual property ownership over parts of Unix were rejected by a U.S. district court. That judgment noted that SCO had minimal resources to defend counter-claims filed by IBM due to SCO's bankruptcy. "It is ordered and adjudged that pursuant to the orders of the court entered on July 10, 2013, February 5, 2016, and February 8, 2016, judgement is entered in favor of the defendant and plaintiff's causes of action are dismissed with prejudice," stated the document. Now, though, SCO has filed yet again to appeal that judgement, although the precise grounds it is claiming haven't yet been disclosed.

  1. Requests to Slashdot's Management by Anonymous Coward · · Score: -1, Offtopic

I sincerely believe Logan et al. want to improve Slashdot and to do the right thing. There are many issues to be addressed, so I make these requests. If you agree with these requests, please reply or repost them to get the attention of the editors.

    1) Make the code running Slashdot open source. It once was FOSS, many years ago. Release it on Sourceforge. Don't be hypocrites about FOSS.

    2) Enable subscriptions and limit the scope of advertising. Make it easy for users to report intrusive or malware ads.

    3) Be transparent about what content you're blocking, especially through the lameness filter. You're censoring stuff; at least tell us what it is.

    4) Don't require logging in to see moderation on posts and friends/foes. Show us how often each moderation type has been applied to a post instead of percentages that don't add up to 100%.

    5) Show us what the Firehose colors mean. Make it easy to change the Firehose filter settings. Also, add links for metamoderation that are easy to find.

    6) Fix the search.pl page. Sometimes it's useful to search for an old comment when you don't know what story it was posted in. That functionality doesn't exist elsewhere.

    7) Tell us what the achievements mean. Most people have no idea what things like "The Maker" mean.

    8) Bring back interviews, features, and Slashback. These were either removed or decreased in frequency for seemingly no good reason.

Finally, about stories posted, you'll get lots of feedback. Malda didn't listen to most of the criticism and just posted what he thought was interesting. People will tell you to get rid of diversity stories, that you're posting too much anti- or pro-MS stuff, that you should stop paid stories (even though those don't exist), or to eliminate StartsWithABang's content. They want the content that interests them, as an individual, without regard for the other readers of the site. Ignore them and post what YOU think is interesting.
