PlayStation Employee Designs Custom Controller For Gamer With Cerebral Palsy (9news.com.au)

An anonymous reader writes: A Sony employee created a custom PlayStation controller for a 21-year-old gamer with cerebral palsy. "I honestly got choked up reading the letter..." gamer Peter Byrne told 9News. "Mr Nawabi really cared about my situation and did this on his own time to make my experience better." On his old PlayStation 4 controller, Byrne kept inadvertently pausing the game whenever his left hand hit the touchpad. "It killed me to hear how something you used to enjoy thoroughly was being ruined because of our new controller design," Sony's Alex Nawabi wrote back in a letter, including a new controller with the original touchpad re-rerouted to the back. Nawabi spent 10 hours assembling parts from three different controllers, adding "Since I've torn the controller apart to modify it, the warranty is no longer valid... I'm not sure how long this will last." But Nawabi promised that he's already planning to also build one more replacement controller.

PS4 games can use unlicensed hardware if they support it. Likewise, if you're trying to make a custom HID dual analog controller with force feedback, a touch pad, analog triggers, a speaker and microphone you'd need a PC game that supports it.

Yeah but to this day so many people on Slashdot really fail to grasp the difference between PC and consoles.

PCs are meant to be open systems, free for all modification, and consoles are meant to be locked down environments, with limited or no scope for modification.

Level of modification runs on a scale from completely open (hardware and software) through to closed hardware, open software - most PCs, through to completely closed (PS4). With openness comes more flexibility, but with more flexibility comes more scope to do things like pirate and to cheat.

So it's really a tradeoff, if I want an open system that I can modify whenever and however I want, I buy a PC. If I want a system where I can play video games on an equal competitive footing with everyone else, then I buy a console.

Now I'm not pretending console security is somehow perfect, and yes, cheating is a problem there sometimes, but to a far smaller degree than on the PC, and that's really the point.

Complaining that consoles aren't open enough is a bit like buying a plane and then complaining like crazy that you're not allowed to drive it down the motorway. No fucking shit, it's not what it's for, get a car if that's what you want to do. Things are built to serve a purpose, and if you expect them to be supported outside of that purpose you'll be bitterly disappointed, and your complaints will be ignored for the simple fact that you've bought the wrong thing - you should've bought the thing that you actually wanted, that does what you actually want.

If you so desperately want to modify then just buy a PC, you can do whatever you want and no one can or will stop you and it's easy. If you really want to buy a console and modify it then you also can, but don't expect it to be easy, because you're not using it as intended, as designed, or what it's actually meant for. When you demand that consoles be open and easy to modify you're demanding that every gamer who bought the console for it's actual purpose - playing games in a more secure environment where cheating is rare gets fucked over. Why should you who wants to use it outside it's intended purpose get priority over people who designed it for it's intended purpose?

Does this mean I'm excusing the console manufacturers for not offering a solution for people such as in TFA? No not at all, they could work far harder to make their systems more disability friendly, but again, this isn't a remotely console specific problem. Not all cars can be driven by people with disabilities either - supporting every disability known to man is an impossible task. I am however saying that people who want consoles to be something else are either wilfully ignorant as to what they are, or complaining for the sake of complaining and not worth listening to.

I'm also saying that you wont be listened to, because consoles aren't what you want them to be, if they were what you wanted them to be they would lose their userbase and wouldn't be consoles, but given that there are literally many billions of dollars to be had in the console market then you're shit out of luck in killing it off, so might as well give up and put your time into something more productive, like modifying your PC if that's what you want to do, or you could build your own open console using PC hardware, as that's worked so well for everyone that's tried it, hasn't it?

These people may need the help (Just as the fund raiser which bring people with a permanent illness or possibly one which will kill them with one event which they will enjoy) and be unable to afford things themselves even if they live in a richer nation but still, kinda if you're not generous enough to take care of your own / each other then maybe you aren't the ones who deserve it the most either. Now the charities usually don't play out against each other but yeah, water for people in regions with long traveling distance and poor access, education, vaccination and health-care and so on are things I may rather spend money on than the American Red Cross and local support in the US.

However I do feel that charity and generosity towards each other may bring more of the same and I know in the US that more people help economically and with time than say in Sweden on their own spare time and with their own money whereas here it's done in an enforced collective way through taxes and then people expect that to solve any issues instead (possibly a more fair solution but the distribution is unfair and stupid. I've rather help 2 000 children in Afghanistan go to school (~400 SEK / person and year) than have one young Afghan man come here (~1 900 SEK / day) to finish school and upgrade his life.)
Anyway, I imagine that if I help families with say children with cancer in the US those people and their community may be grateful and help support others in their way too so I don't see it as a complete waste.

(Wish HB was less US and UK centric and happily help bring controllers for disabled people so they too can play games :), though to be fair wouldn't it be best if society provided this just as with hearing aids and IMHO visual aid too (I wear glasses myself)?)
