    This is what happens when a significant majority of your workforce does not wish to hear any opposing viewpoints and actively punish anyone who does not toe the party line. They create a self-imposed echo chamber so that "all is well" in their tiny little world.

    Good because it might convince companies to move elsewhere. Too much tech is concentrated in a small area. It makes it difficult for non-tech workers to get decent housing and everything is equally expensive.

    As a tech worker, I would like to move out of the area, but my options are limited.

    Income - PovertyLine = Taxable income. With a flat tax, calculating the amount is easy.

    You make 30,000. You subtract the 25,000 Poverty Line (or whatever it is) from your income. That leaves 5,000 that is taxable. A 10% flat tax rate means a $500 tax
    Even the rich guy with a 500,000 income gets to subtract that 25,000 from his income. Not that it will make much of a difference in his taxes. The tax would be $47,500, assuming a 10% flat tax.

    But I have three kids. Where's my deduction?
    You don't get a child deduction. Having kids was your choice that other people should not be required to subsidize.

    What about my mortgage interest deduction?
    You don't get a mortgage interest deduction. Buying a house was your choice that people stuck in apartments should not have to subsidize.

    There are over a billion Muslims. Mostly in India and Indonesia. If you don't think that the ones committing all the violence are a fringe group, then you are vastly underestimating the damage a billion people could do, if they really wanted to.

    Based on polls, it isn't fringe group of muslims who support violence. By definition, fringe group would constitute a fraction of a percentage of the people. Here's just a sampling of the opinion polls:

    Pew Global: 68% of Palestinian Muslims say suicide attacks against civilians in defense of Islam are justified.
    43% of Nigerian Muslims say suicide attacks against civilians in defense of Islam are justified.
    38% of Lebanese Muslims say suicide attacks against civilians in defense of Islam are justified.
    15% of Egyptian Muslims say suicide attacks against civilians in defense of Islam are justified.
    13% of Indonesian Muslims say suicide attacks against civilians in defense of Islam are justified.
    12% of Jordanian Muslims say suicide attacks against civilians in defense of Islam are justified.
    7% of Muslim Israelis say suicide attacks against civilians in defense of Islam are justified.

    Do christians regularly commit violence against non-believers and people who commit "sins"? Not really. Fringe groups like the Westboro Baptist Church are almost universally hated by other christians. Meanwhile, violence in the name of islam happens so often that it has become background noise and is rarely reported by the news media.

    Which is a damn stupid attitude. Not everyone who uses software is qualified to write code for it. Even a skilled coder might not have the chops for a particular type of software. Take encryption, for example. That's a highly specialized field requiring a highly specialized skill-set.

    I don't know about Korean phone companies, but the American ones will make sure they have a loophole. For example, allow stuff to be deleted, but reinstall it with the next "patch" which happens at least weekly. Yes, I know patches aren't that often, but they will be.

  10. I have a company laptop I sometimes use at home. They do scan it. I don't mind because it's for work and I never use it for personal stuff. They do not get to touch my personal computer for any reason. If they demanded access I would tell them to fuck off.

  11. Make it so caller id can not be spoofed. Not sure if that is possible. At least make it a major crime to spoof caller id. I'll allow id blocking since there are times when that is necessary (anonymous tips, etc.). Make the telcos responsible for enforcing it (as much as is feasible).

    Watch as a bunch of businesses re-incorporate in another state. The politicians in Sacramento haven't figured out that a lot of businesses are not physically tied to California. My state already has one of the highest corporate tax rates in the country and the fees are never ending.

    I accidentally ordered something "direct from China" on Amazon. It took bloody forever to get here. About three weeks. I expect stuff within a week. If I need it faster, I buy from a store if possible.

    Too many false reviews clutter Amazon. I was going to buy an item that wasn't cheap, and started reading the reviews. Lots of five star reviews, with gushing love for the Amazon Partner. Digging down, though, I found some funny stuff. A lot of the five star reviews were all posted on the exact same day. Looking into these accounts, they all reviewed the exact same products on the same days. I decided not to purchase the product from that particular amazon partner. Perhaps I overlooked it, but there didn't seem to be an obvious way to report fake reviews.

    Side note, I already knew the product was top notch. I was concerned about the company selling it. Glad I looked into it.

  17. The people who know what to do with an IP address already know how to look up the ip address. And we are a significant minority. There is no need to clutter the display with information that is absolutely useless to the overwhelming majority of users.

  19. This is about convicted criminals who are still paying their debt. Giving back their voting rights AFTER they are released is a different matter entirely.

  20. By their own actions, convicted felons doing time are not part of regular society, so they don't get a say in how it should operate. There are consequences to engaging in criminal activity.

    Congratulations. You've just learned government 101. The entirety of government power is based on threats. Most people pay their taxes not because they want to hand over a large percentage of their hard earned money. They pay their taxes because of the threat of being tossed in jail if they don't.

    The problem is there's only a couple of good apples at the bottom of a barrel filled with rotten ones. And good luck teaching your 80 year old grandmother how to avoid scams. The elderly are targeted because they are easy.

    During high school, the narrative pushed by the teachers was, "you are a failure if you don't go to college". That is an insult to all those people making excellent money as electricians, plumbers, carpenters, etc. This lie pushed many people into college who had no business being there.

    Unfortunately, your typical high school graduate has rather limited math skills, so aren't able to figure out that a $50,000 loan to get a job that pays $30,000/year is probably a bad financial decision. The lenders have zero incentive to turn down these loans since they are guaranteed. A future fix is to limit loan amounts based on the degree being pursued. A STEM major can get a bigger loan. A genders studies major is sent back to community college.
