Hacked Swedish Military Servers Used In Attacks On US Banks (securityweek.com)

Reader wiredmikey writes: Swedish military computers were hacked and used in an attack targeting major U.S. banks in 2013, the armed forces said on Monday. The attack knocked out the web sites of as many as 20 major U.S. banks and financial institutions, sometimes for several days. According to Swedish military spokesman Mikael Abramsson, a server in the Swedish defense system had a vulnerability which was exploited by hackers to carry out the attacks. At the time, the attack, which began in 2012 and continued for months, was one of the biggest ever reported. U.S. officials blamed Iran, suggesting it was in retaliation for political sanctions and several earlier cyberattacks on its own systems.

In other words, we know that Iran must be doing this horrible awful thing, because we've been doing it to them and they must be getting upset about that.

Not sure what that has to do with anything though. The attacks coming through Sweden doesn't prove or disprove where they originated, so I don't see the point of the above quote.

Sweden was a military superpower between app. 1600-1750, both on sea and especially on land. Their King Charles XII was more or less the Great Alexander of the north, he invaded Germany, Russia, Norway, etc. at the same time. Eventually his own people shot him in the head, being tired of several decades of constant warfare.

Nowadays Sweden has a strong-ish military, because they are officially neutral, thus without reliable allies, but afraid the russians might invade to fetch their long-legged blondes and Volvos. Sweden of just 5 million people has had 3 generations of locally built Mach 2 supersonic fighter jets, the latest incarnation named SAAB JAS-39 Gripen does everything the F-16 does, in half the size and cost. My country uses them, just like the czech and the thai.

    > No wonder their servers were cracked, they don't have anyone working in IT either by my reckoning.

Huh? Sweden invented the hand-held mobile phone, together with Norway and Finland (Nordic Mobile Phone or NMT-450). Comrade Gorbachev gave up on the Cold War when he was handed a working anenna phone from the production line, when the same or (more capable) soviet (military) hardware travelled on 6x6 heavy truck chassis. Next, the nordic people invented digital, rater than analogue mobile phones together (GSM 900), Ericsson for Sweden, Nokia for Finland.
