Microsoft Prepares One Final, Full-Screen Get Windows 10 Nag (zdnet.com)
An anonymous reader shares a ZDNet report:Those persistent Get Windows 10 pop-ups are going away soon, after Microsoft's free upgrade offer for Windows 10 expires on July 29. During those final days and hours, anyone still running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 should brace for one last round of upgrade prods from Redmond, including a full-screen message, as the GWX program moves into its final phase. The details are in a new Knowledge Base article, "Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 SP1 end of free upgrade offer notification," which includes a screenshot of the message as well as some helpful hints on how to avoid seeing it more than once. Two noteworthy additions are visible in the lower left corner of that screen. Instead of merely dismissing the reminder, you can ask to be notified up to three more times or specify that you've made your mind up and you don't want any more notifications.
Can I sue M$ for all the time I spent making sure Win10 *wouldn't* be put on my Windows 7 development machines?

Only tinfoil hat losers and businesses with enterprise licensing aren't upgrading to Windows 7. If you freaks and dorks weren't so paranoid, you wouldn't have these problems.
First check if the user is running any DirectX application, preferable a popular game on full screen mode for a couple of hours, then force-kill the top process and send this big 'love meeee!' message from Windows 10.
I'm sure users will appreciate.
They actually added a "don't bug me anymore" link on the nag screen. Not very prominent, but it's there! Whether it works or not remains to be seen.
THE SOFTWARE, IT NO WORKY!!!
A free upgrade? How Convenient!
No means no.
let it be a goatse link
I'll be waiting for Microsoft to realize that they failed and back off on their current plans, possibly under another management team. Otherwise, it's goodbye...and i'll keep running Windows 7 until driver support evaporates, and then re-evaluate. My guess is that i'll be able to keep running it beyond 2020.

thankfully I have my updates turned off
I'll probably move to mint soon, I do like how it looks and I've had ubuntu as my primary os before. Aside for some games not being available it shouldn't be much of a hasle. We'll see.
Microsoft is simply trying to convert LUDDITES using LUDDITE Windows 7 to modern app appers by automatically appgrading their app apping device to Appdows 10!

Why don't they just follow the proven industry standard of hiring some sweatshop in Bangladesh to simulate active daily users?

I have no idea how this wasn't a class action lawsuit months ago.
I have no idea how it isn't a class action lawsuit now.
It's surprising that lady who sued for $10k is the only noteworthy case to date.
Whats the big deal over Win 10? why are pushing so hard?
Just this week, the company laptop running win7 started getting the win10 upgrade nag after been completely devoid of it since the very beginning...
ELOI, ELOI, LAMA SABACHTHANI!?

Did Microsoft management fail the "no means no" sex education classes?
Microsoft intentional deafness on this matter has completely and irretrievably soured my opinion on them.
When Microsoft finally makes Windows 10 a subscription service, I will have been long gone to the World of Linux.
This is what fake support companies did no?
Microsoft slammed fake support companies web pages and viral programs making it look like something was wrong with their computers and to dial a number, hand over CC details and get it fixed.
So. it was bad for them to do it, but now it's good for Microsoft to use the SAME tactics?
The more they nag the more I put my fingers in my earlalas and go lalala.
X marks the spot of buried treasure, worth circa. $10,000 I hear :)
Reminding people that after July 29th, it's going to cost $119 to upgrade and you'll eventually have to upgrade anyway, so you might as well get it now while it's free. Free >>> buying a new PC that's gonna have Windows 10 anyway >>> switching to Mac and let's be real: anyone who could switch to Linux already has and doesn't use windows anyway.
im downloading the update iso now because it will probably still work after the 29th (if i ever need to upgrade for some reason)

to prevent an involuntary overwrite. I don't think it stops the nag, but you won't get a "helpful surprise" install against your will.

the "free" upgrade offer would not have an expiry date.

And if I'm lucky, it will be the LAST thing Microsoft gets to do with ANY Windows. I figured out how they got their updates through even though I had Windows Update Disabled. Took some system log reading and double-checking time stamps from the OS.

I don't really need a certain OS any more. Much of what I need is web accessible or platform neutral. I liked Windows 7 but I have never wanted Windows 10 and decided it was time to break with Windows. Since it appears Windows 10 is it and I cannot expect anything but incremental updates. So I moved over to Ubuntu Linux to see if it does better. I cannot stand how Microsoft has treated its customers over Windows 10 upgrades.
I heard if you go into the bathroom, turn off the lights and say "Windows 10" three times it appears in the mirror and tries to consume your soul.

On one of my Windows 7 machines, I actually reserved the Windows 10 upgrade many months ago, but nothing happens. Clicking on the icon in the task bar always shows "Your upgrade is reserved... blah blah blah". So it's kind of funny to be nagged by GWX, and at the same time to wait in vain for a download that never completes. Not that it matters that much to me, it's just funny. If it doesn't complete by the deadline, that machine will stay on Windows 7 which runs just fine. I got an upgrade on another test machine without any problems; and all this is only to analyze the behavior of Windows 10 w.r.t. security. Real work with sensitive data I do on Linux and FreeBSD anyway.

..and on my To-Do List is to migrate my computers off of Windows and onto some version of Linux. Enough is too much.
Are YOU using the TOOL, or is the TOOL using YOU? Think about it!
You have a nice system there it will be better with windows 10 we don't want something bad to happen with your copy of windows 7 or 8.
...on behalf of everyone who hasn't already been forced into an "upgrade", allow me to say "NO".
Just cruising through this digital world at 33 1/3 rpm...
A better alternative to suicide is simply to install Linux.
aaaaaaa
How are they going to get people to pay for something that they refused when it was free?
Windows itself is no longer secure on the internet.

Dear Microsoft:
Fuck you.

Instead of merely dismissing the reminder, you can ask to be notified up to three more times
Because obviously users have been complaining to Microsoft that they weren't nagged enough to update, and wanted more nagging.
Seriously, WTF Microsoft ? Haven't you learned a single fucking thing over the last year from your pissed off userbase ?
Of course you have, but like the overbearing cockwombles you are, you think you know better.
It kills support for Outlook Express and does not provide a way to import emails into Outlook 2016. It breaks the compatibility of a proprietary billing system built by the State of ************ that businesses are REQUIRED to use and are not yet available for Windows 10. My labor hours are in the hundreds to keep State machines on Windows 7 alone. Microsoft has irreparably harmed public trust, destroyed their brand image, and cost businesses billions of dollars across the world. Unnecessary, unwanted, unethical, anti-trust.
Sorry Microsoft, I'm a developer leaving the platform. No more MSDN, no more Azure.
Bye.

Fuckin microsoft. Windows 7. Every single person bar 1 has told me the same thing "windows 10? its hard to use."

Classic unsubstantiated and erroneous claim.
From the screenshot it looks like the "Upgrade now" box is selected by default. If this is the case I wonder if it gives you a warning if you accidentally hit the enter key causing it to choose the upgrade.
In retrospect, with the suckage that is Windows 10, it's clear that Microsoft should've stuck to the odd-even, sucks-badly/sucks a little less badly, naming convention.
This is how they get people off Win32 and onto UWP as well. The Windows PC will end up closed and signed top to bottom one way or another.
Twinstiq, game news
You paid for the version you use to download their 10. What you download is spyware. Spyware is not an upgrade.
Google "GWX Control Panel", download, install and run. The rest is fairly explanatory.
Some of us who lived in the dim past days of OS/2 and limited support. You just make your own i suppose. A great variety of programs are removed by hand, especially if the system is not pre-emptively single-tasking in just the way ye want. So you fire up the range of utilities needed to do things.
Until recently, I used Windows 2000, but have since moved on to Windows 7 Ultimate. They started putting on this 'free upgrade to windows 10' on Windows 7. Kind of like how websites offer you free toolbars for your web browser that pins your computer in. I suppose it's one thing if your Browser updates, cause you can dump it overboard, it's different if your OS does.
So you can hand-remove it. The trouble is that the programs are locked, and run on the user System authority of 'TrustedInstaller' So if you don't have a neat utility that can wrangle the trustedinstaller permsisions, it's pretty hard. Someone cobbled a ' run as trusted installer' program, which copies the token of TI and runs your proggie on that token. Ok. Then you can hunt down the directory and trim the files (ie you can't delete them even if you're running as administrator or system). Needless to say GWX appeared about five or six times.
Being for the benefit of users who pay by the megabyte upload, Microsoft provided a 'background' service which hammers the hard drive for a good few minutes. You can't stop that outside of running as TI either. You can't even read the strings in the binary until you do it as TI. "We're just poking around your hard disk and seeing what sort of stuff you have".
It is of course, spaghetti ini files. Microsoft tried it in the Win2k resource kit (which i looked at at this time), which uses a local ini file, bounces to a CLSID back to a DLL in the system32 directory, back to a registry for more settings, and bounce back to an INI file in the reskit directory. I wanted to add the support kit to this stuff. It worked, sort of.
So "TrustedInstaller" seems to run at a level hitherto reserved for viruses. Even the clever folk would not have the wherewithall to cope with TI without serious hacking. It is little wonder that people use GWXCP and Never10. Vigilance is the price of democracy.
OS/2 - because choice is a terrible thing to waste.
