Fedora 25 To Run Wayland By Default Instead Of X.Org Server (phoronix.com)
An anonymous reader writes: Fedora 25 will finally be the first release for this Linux distribution -- and the first tier-one desktop Linux OS at large -- that is going ahead and using Wayland by default. Wayland has been talked about for years as a replacement to the xorg-server and finally with the upcoming Fedora 25 release this is expected to become a reality. The X.Org Server will still be present on Fedora systems for those running into driver problems or other common issues.
Fedora's steering committee agreed to the change provided the release notes "are clear about how to switch back to X11 if needed." In addition, according to the Fedora Project's wiki, "The code will automatically fall back to Xorg in cases where Wayland is unavailable (like NVIDIA)."

"Nobody's enthusiastic about X. We're not not happy about a replacement that lacks the features of X that we loved and in many cases relied upon."
A bit misleading seeing as how you're practically wanking on X so hard in this comment, it's a wonder you had a digit left available to type with. Did you miss the part in the article SUMMARY, since we all know you didn't bother reading the article, where your "loved" features will still be available as a fallback option? Yes, of course you did, that's why I pointed it out to you. Oh no, I'm sure you're already angrily typing...this is obviously intended as a "replacement" for X, even though the article I'm commenting on states precisely the contrary! You know what else is going to be replaced eventually? Luddites like yourself who can't adjust to change. There are distributions out there for people just like you, hundreds of them. What's stopping you from, say, not using a distribution that intends to "replace" your beloved X? For that matter, what's stopping you from doing the go-to Linux distro IRC op's suggestion for anyone with a problem with a given package no longer being maintained; maintaining it yourself? There, two options to avoid the supposedly inevitable "replacement" of X, yet you're CHOOSING not to take either. It's not being forced on you, you're grudgingly accepting it because you're too lazy and lacking in talent to do otherwise. Tough to hear, I know. Tough shit, reality doesn't go away because you don't like what it has to say.
" And no, I don't want to hear that only "1% of users use the XSERVER variable" or that the underlying implementation wasn't very good."
Pretty typical Slashdot luser here. "I shall now plug my ears and ignore any arguments against my software-du-jour, therefore invalidating them!" Explain again why you showed up to a forum for discussion and debate loudly exclaiming how you're not going to have any of it, because it *GASP* doesn't agree with your narrow view of the world?
"Hardly anyone uses GNU/Linux, but we'd never accept that as an argument for abolishing the operating system and requiring Windows."
Even if that did comparison DID make any sense (it doesn't), it'd be better to put it as follows:
"Hardly anyone uses the networking functions of X, but we'd never accept that as an argument for abolishing X and requiring Wayland."
That's what you're really saying. That's what you're actually arguing. Again, I would have to point out for the sake of countering your lies and deception,
1) X isn't being abolished or replaced, Wayland isn't being "required" by anyone. It's becoming the default in one Linux distribution, possibly more if it turns out to be a good decision, if not it'll be dropped like a hot rock. Example? XFree86, a rather relevant example these days in fact. You old wankers were doing the same "sky is falling" routine when the fork happened, now you're using the FORK to PERFORM said routine again.
2) Even if X WERE being abolished, replaced or required (which it isn't), armchair activists such as yourself could literally dodge the bullet overnight by forking said projects and maintaining your own distribution that remains true to your values. Or you know, use one of the hundred or so out there that already do that. You won't do either though, because you're an arrogant, lazy shit.
Now go ahead, post your snarky, sarcastic "BOFH" response that I'll happily ignore along with the rest of the senile retirees in this thread.
