New, Higher Measurement of Universe's Expansion May Lead To a 'New Physics' (space.com)
doug141 writes: Astronomers have measured the universe's current expansion rate (a value known as the Hubble constant) at about 44.7 miles (71.9 kilometers) per second per megaparsec (3.26 million light-years). This is consistent with a calculation that was announced last year by a research team, but it's considerably higher than the rate that was estimated by the European Space Agency's Planck satellite mission in 2015 -- about 41.6 miles (66.9 km) per second per megaparsec. The cause of this discrepancy is unclear. "The expansion rate of the universe is now starting to be measured in different ways with such high precision that actual discrepancies may possibly point towards new physics beyond our current knowledge of the universe," a researcher said. Mike Wall writes via Space.com: "The differences in the Hubble constant estimates may reflect something that astronomers don't understand about the early universe, or something that has changed since that long-ago epoch, scientists have said. For example, it's possible that dark energy -- the mysterious force that's thought to be driving the universe's accelerating expansion -- has grown in strength over the eons, members of Riess' team said last year. The discrepancy could also indicate that dark matter -- the strange, invisible stuff that astronomers think vastly outweighs 'normal' matter throughout the universe -- has as-yet-unappreciated characteristics, or that Einstein's theory of gravity has some holes, they added."
Well the wall is coming and the Mexicans will pay for it after all. If not directly, than indirectly through import taxes. I wonder how long it will take for the Mexicans to ask if they can just pay for the wall in exchange for lower import taxes.
It's strange because so many people told me that he could never achieve what he promised. Yet the first steps are being made.
Yesterday I saw some 'comedy' daily show where the presenter was talking about unemployment statistics, while some weird Trump spokesman, the 'alternative news' guy, talked about alternative sources. Even I understood what that guy meant with alternative sources. You have the unemployed who still are expected to get a job, and people who simply don't work because the gave up on getting a job. This last group doesn't show up in the statistics, just like in my country.
When someone like an unpopular president wants to attempt to create jobs for even the people who gave up, why don't you at least let them do instead of defending the way statistics are calculated? I would love if there was a government that protected productive and meaningful jobs in my country, instead of letting foreigner do all infrastructure works for example. I know plenty of people who are now stuck in a subsidized job as a cleaner who would love to help build roads, bridges, waterworks, ... Instead of a job that is being looked down upon by others.
I've worked more then twenty years for large European companies, helping to create the technologies that have become mainstream. Since 2007, the last office in Europe was moved to China. What do I do know? I've become a freaking code monkey that just hacks together yet another fad thought up by some marketing guy. Instead of working on exciting new technologies like mobile phones, smart phones, home robots, production robots, space robots, ... I've to build freaking me too apps because all interesting companies moved to the low wage Far East ...
Even when you don't like Trump, there can be good side about some of his policies.
