Apple Opens App Accelerator in Bangalore, India To Foster iOS App Development (mashable.com)

From a report: Apple is taking further steps to foster the developer ecosystem in the world's fastest growing smartphone market. The Cupertino-based company said it has opened a new App Accelerator in Bangalore, India. The announcement comes less than a year after the company said it would open an iOS App Design and Development Accelerator in India's Silicon Valley. Through the new App Accelerator, the company hopes to offer specialised support to developers as well as tools to help them push the boundaries. At the centre, a group of experts will lead briefings and provide one-on-one app reviews for developers. [...] With Apple's push to turn India into its next major market, it will pay in the long run to have quality apps that solve local problems on the App Store.

You've got that backwards, this is about having Indians write apps for non Indian markets. Basically so App production can be farmed out to off-shored body shops more easily.

Upto now, every app written has been available for iOS, and the bulk of them have been US centric. I don't know if it's changed more recently, but the last I looked, any Indian who wanted to get something from Apple's app store had to have a US account. Which made iPhones attractive to a very small segment of the population. In fact, in India, iPhones have a marketshare equivalent to that of the Lumia, although the latter may have fallen since Microsoft pulled the plug on the line.

So this move DOES look like Apple trying to create apps to service Indian customers. There isn't a shortage of apps servicing Western markets for Apple

India has been recognized as a separate region in the App store for ages. Availability and price can be set separately for India, and pricing is in rupees. I've no doubt that popularity of iPhones in India is low, but that's due to its rather high price compared to the average disposable income. But many, many Indians in IT working overseas for a while seem to posess iPhones and iPads (new models too). Some get paid (partly) in € or $ while abroad, and they get to keep and spend some of that if they manage to save on their living expenses. In that case it appears that iStuff is pretty high on their wish list.
