Microsoft's Surface Pro 5 Said To Move To Intel Kaby Lake Processors (techcrunch.com)

Windows watcher Paul Thurrott has revealed the first credible details about Microsoft's Surface Pro 5. TechCrunch reports: The Surface Pro 5 will have the same power connector currently used on the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Book, which is a long, thin magnetic jack. The upcoming device will also use Intel's Kaby Lake processors, and it makes perfect sense that the company would want to jump to the latest and greatest chips in its new generation hardware. Other details, including price, the use of USB-C, and basically anything regarding size and hardware design aren't yet known, though Thurrott reports the changes to the Pro 5 won't be a "dramatic" departure from the existing generation.

      Where I work we traded our laptops for surface pro 4's and everyone loves them. I personally love my surface pro 4.

    I've used the first 4 generations of Surface Pro's at work. They started pretty pointless but by the 3 and 4 I feel like MS got their shit together. They're pretty solid machines, on the condition that you aren't paying for them yourself. Anyone considering one of the Pro's and is concerned about the price, I'd seriously consider how you'll use it. It's good at what it does, but there's a good chance you can get a NewEgg/MicroCenter sale tablet that will do 80% of what you want for 5% of the cost.

    Personally they end up doing tablet things most of the time, with the added bonus of being able to do real work if you are in the kind of environment where you move around the same building a lot. 3 meeting rooms, my desk, and 2 labs convinced me, even if it was just for convenience of a portable OneNote machine that could run Visual Studio and connect to our production servers using all our desktop tools. For personal use though, I have a competent i5 laptop and an $80 Android tablet that does all the same for half the price. Not to mention I can upgrade/repair the laptop, and if I had to replace the tablet I could still eat this week.

      Most distrobustions will install fine, but you need to use an external keyboard and then install a kernel hack because I haven't found a distro that includes the device ids for the keyboards... and each model keyboard uses a different ID.. I had to install a different hack when I switched from a SP3 Type cover to the SP3 keyboard... (which was a HUGE upgrade on the keyboard...)

    It may not at first but it should eventually. All missing hardware drivers for the Surface Pro 3 and 4 series were added to the Linux 4.8 kernel including the incredible touch / pen display.
