Apple Releases macOS 10.12.5, iOS 10.3.2, watchOS 3.2.2, tvOS 10.2.1 (macworld.com)

On Monday, Apple released point updates to all its operating systems. Starting with the desktop, the macOS 10.12.5 update for Sierra is the fifth major update since the operating system was released in September of 2016. The iPhone-maker also released the iOS 10.3.2 for iPhones, iPads and iPods to the public. The update for Macs offers a range of bug fixes, improvements to Night Shift, and a long list of security patches. The iOS 10.3.2 update offers "bug fixes and improves the security."       Surprised they didn't stagger the release! They've made their support lines into a bottle neck so defect resolution/mitigation will be slower because suddenly they are dealing with an update to 4 OS's at the same time. If they had staggered them they'd be able to prioritize.

      Surprised they didn't stagger the release! They've made their support lines into a bottle neck so defect resolution/mitigation will be slower because suddenly they are dealing with an update to 4 OS's at the same time. If they had staggered them they'd be able to prioritize.

      Probably not much need to prioritize is my guess. With my Apple stuff, it's staggered no matter when and what.

      And most of the updates are based on improvements, not so often on things like WannaCry type panics. So It can be a more leisurely process for people.

      You mean the PDF editing that comes with the OS, rather than being an Adobe add-on that just displays PDF, has no editing facilities, and which still has to be updated every time you use it?

      The internal PDF handling was rewritten for Sierra; as a result many are complaining of blank pages, saves that don't, and a couple of other issues.

      You realize that the OSX Quartz rendering engine basically replicates the PDF standard for displaying, well, everything, right? Windows is raster-based, Quartz 2D is mostly vector-based relying on PDF as its underlying display philosophy. Apple treats the visual aspects of PDF as a first-class citizen in its rendering model, and it dumps the stupid fluff crap that Adobe tacked on to provide avenues for malware.

      Yes, that is obviously what he means. We're talking about the OS and the question is whether they have fixed all the bugs that were introduced as part of the rewrite of that functionality in Sierra.

      yes the PDF editing that comes with the OS. they introduced many bugs and id like it to work properly as that is what i have always used rather than the alternative you specified due its shortcomings.

      On a Mac you say "print" and then "save as PDF" ... nothing to edit.

      On a Mac you say "print" and then "save as PDF" ... nothing to edit.

      I don't think you understand the issue. If, for example, one fills out a PDF form (read editing) the information entered is not saved anymore. One has to Export to PDF upon form completion.
      I hope that helps you to understand the issue.

      That's just the way you create a PDF. What I'm talking about is the ability to, after PDFs have been created or downloaded, remove individual pages from one, copy and paste pages from other PDFs, write text on PDFs, and apply markups like circling a price or drawing arrows to text you want to emphasize. To do these things on a PC you have to buy a "Pro" version of the Acrobat add-on that costs hundreds of dollars.

      Apple has no own "PDF editing program" just like Linux and Windows

      Preview, the Apple PDF editor, comes with the system. On Windows you have to buy the Pro version of Acrobat to do that.

      Don't worry so much! If your laptop gets slow, it's time to open the small bottom cover over the memory modules and add or replace some to dramatically increase the size of your RAM.

      Probably not.

      A clean install of Sierra might fix your problems.

      I run Sierra 10.12.4 and my machine has never had a kernel panic.
      I use the machine for twelve to fourteen hours a day and the cooling
      fans are often running, yet the machine hasn't skipped a beat.

      I'm not saying that Apple doesn't make shitty stuff, because
      since Tim Cook took over that has been the case all too often.
      In my opinion the last truly good version of OS X was about five
      revisions ago, but it is difficult to hang onto such old versions
      for various reasons, so one usually ends up "upgrading" to
      the newer OS version.

      Again, your original Sierra install may be the source of the problems
      with your machine and that a clean reinstall may well fix it. Or you
      can do nothing and continue to have something to bitch about !

      If you're panicking that frequently, either you have bad hardware or a shitty third party kext that is trashing the kernel. You know it writes the panic out so you can see what's wrong?

      They literally wrote launchd, that was eventually corrupted into systemd.

      Only they did it right, released it to the planet twelve years ago, and the FOSStards STILL couldn't get it right!

      Turn off background app refresh, and turn off location services for everything except the compass (used for map directions, etc.). That will double your battery life easily.

      The issue with iPhone 6s is not that the battery runs down particularly fast. The issue is that iOS thinks it does. It's very annoying to have the phone drop from 30-some percent to zero and shut itself off. Turning it on immediately shows between 20% and 40% battery remaining. One of the early iOS 10.x patches introduced this bug, and Apple's taking their time to fix it. Or took their time, if 10.3.2 actually addresses it. I'm not holding my breath.

      Of course Apple takes their time to fix it. Most Apple customers will think their phone is worn out and go buy a new one!

    These usually come around the time of iOS updates.

    Updated to 10.12.5, my Mac mini now hangs during boot if a display port monitor is connected. Have to use HDMI instead. I guess that is one of the "Night Shift improvements". : (
