Verizon Expected To Cut Up To 1,000 Yahoo, AOL Jobs After Acquisition (recode.net)

Verizon's acquisition and merger of AOL and Yahoo will result in many job cuts. According to Recode, up to 1,000 AOL and Yahoo jobs are expected to take place across the two companies as the merger is completed. From the report: This action is not unexpected, given that both companies have a lot of redundancies, including in human resources, finance, marketing and general administration. The merger between the two companies -- after Verizon bought both in succession to add tech and content to its mobile services -- is expected to be completed in the next week. The shareholder meeting to approve the deal takes place tomorrow. Plans to combine both companies have been in the works for a while, as the pair attempt to make a cohesive unit out of two entities that have multiple assets and also multiple problems. It will be headed by AOL CEO Tim Armstrong, who will become the CEO of Oath, the new name for the Verizon subsidiary.

      Sort of irony is a big part of being a hipster. "So stupid it's cool again". Except the fact that when I wore those silly clothes, shoes, glasses they were free hand-me-downs, not $80 each. Having like $5 left in your bank account is also a big part of being a hipster... ahh well I much rather be around hipsters than some kinds of people, at least they are fun.

      nothing more, nothing less.

      secret to everything hipster: it has to have some kind of a stupid aspect to it - something impractical. like if you want a hipster bicycle you make it a fixed gear without ratchet at the back wheel. impractical as hell and bad to ride.

    You work in a failing company. Your company gets bought by a successful company. You have a good 6 months warning. If you're half way competent at your job why would you possibly stay in your current job?

    Those that get canned are too lazy to get a job, too incompetent to get a job, or really stupid.

      I'm going to guess they're sleep deprived and too tired to look for another job, waiting to get laid off so they can get some sleep.

      I've had friends in similar situations and one of the reasons they stayed to the end is they got paid a significant bonus to do so. During these mergers, the companies are always afraid that they'll lose the best and brightest needed to keep the lights on. The companies often go to those people and make them an offer of some level of compensation in order to get them to ride it out to the end.

      One guy, I used to work with got six months pay over and above the standard severance package for staying until the company was liquidated. Between that bonus, his severance package, cashed out leave, and the salary he earned during that last year he made a sizable amount of money by being one of the last people out the door. He then conducted a leisurely six-month job search, mostly from a beach, while he collected unemployment.

      Even if you are good at your job if you live in a location where there is little work of that type, then finding another job may be difficult. This can be the case for many areas, especially when a relatively geographically concentrated industry contracts (steel, coal, etc) no matter how good the skills of those losing their jobs.

      If you are then looking at moving you need to change two jobs, potentially, so then the limiting factor may not be your skills, but those of your partner. Or your partner might have great skills and pay, but not something that commands a premium in SV, and moving there might leave you much worse off, even with a personal pay rise, do you wait.

      Many people if they are working someplace for a long term are hesitant to transition jobs- and just hope that they won't be one of the ones affected by the layoffs. There's no reason to disparage them.

      Exactly. A lot of people on slashdot forget that work is primarily about balancing the work/leisure mix, so if you can earn six months worth of free holiday time just by carrying on turning up for work and making sure no one nicks the spare laptops, why wouldn't you?

      The exceptions would be people whose work is intrinsically important and rewarding to them, which I assume wouldn't apply to anyone working for AOL or Yahoo in the first place.

    there's a massive round of layoffs as redundancies are eliminated or people are forced to work harder to hang onto their crap jobs. If you wanted efficiency, well you got it.

      It's a shame that redundancies is a real thing. It muddles the issue. But every time I've witnessed an acquisition they get rid of almost everyone. The few they keep are the privileged snivelers who never actually do anything except collect a salary anyway. The most productive are often the first to go.

      Don't you understands? Mergers create jobs. They create them. They're a job creator. Those crooks that they don't want us to get the merger, they don't want americans to have jobs. They look at this and say "a thousand jobs will be lost if we stop it from happening, jobs that would be kept if there's a merger" and they try to stop it from covfefe

    What we have is a continuation of disappearance of jobs for Americans AOL might as well call itself IOL (Indian on line), and Yahoo might as well call itself Yihoo, if counting the Indian H1-B holders and the jobs which has been outsourced to India Sad

      Nope. Instead they passed laws that say that they don't have to label where meat comes from, by repealing COOL. You are not permitted to know, comrade.

      I was wondering the same thing. AOL turned into a company that is a one stop shop for digital advertising like Google. You can find info here. They're also now Aol not AOL. Because you know, that's cooler these days...
