China Cracks Down on VPN Vendors (bbc.com)

An anonymous reader shares a BBC report: China's latest crackdown on those attempting to skirt state censorship controls has seen it warn e-commerce platforms over the sale of illegal virtual private networks (VPNs). Five websites, including shopping giant Alibaba, have been asked to remove vendors that sell VPNs. It is the latest in a series of measures from the Chinese government to maintain strict control over content. Apple has previously been asked to remove VPN apps. China's cyber-regulator the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) has ordered the websites to carry out immediate "self-examination and correction." "The CAC has ordered these five sites to immediately carry out a comprehensive clean-up of harmful information, close corresponding illegal account.. and submit a rectification report by a deadline," the regulator said in a statement.

It means that freedom is the natural state of human existence, and oppression is the artificial state. Freedom doesn't need to be planned or imposed by some authority; it's already there. It's part of who we are. All we have to do is let it flourish. Oppression, on the other hand, needs to be actively planned and imposed by some central authority. Put a hundred people on a deserted island, and the natural state is freedom, and it applies to all by default. Oppression will only come about if carefully planned, organized, and implemented -- without the participation of those who will be oppressed.

The bottom line is that human rights preceded government, not the other way around. As individuals, we don't prefer to be free because it was voted on or decided by other people -- we prefer it because we evolved to prefer it.

Appeal to the feelgood term "natural". Snake venom is natural. Arsenic is natural. Lions ripping off the ball-sack of their prey first and proceeding to eat the entrails while they're still alive is natural. That doesn't mean these things are particularly "good".

What's the natural state of human existence? What evolution has most adapted us for. A scenario ~10,000 ago when it was a lot more typical for Ug to crack the skull of Og so he could take his women. That isn't ideal and we can probably do better. The fact that we want to bang furiously when we're 13 and crank out as many babies as possible might be natural, but it doesn't quite fit the current state of affairs. And speaking of babies, they aren't born free. Kids aren't free. Kids raised in a state of freedom are considered feral and face lifelong developmental issues. The family unit is a type of government. But go way back there and before there were packs of animals, the individualistic self-serving r-selection type bacteria came first.

. As individuals, we don't prefer to be free because it was voted on or decided by other people -- we prefer it because we evolved to prefer it.

That's a much better argument. It's not so much that it's a natural state (and it is), it's that if we move out of that natural state we go fucking crazy. Who cares about what's natural, the important part is the ramifications when you fuck with it.

I think everyone needs a degree of freedom just as they need a degree of order, we're social creatures after all. And when it comes to freedom of speech and freedom of association, I am 100% on board with defending these rights and a fundamental basis for a good society as every exception where they've been impinged has royally fucking sucked for the masses who had to suffer under such oppression (That's an argument of compassion which won't get you very far with some assholes) and because of the civil discord that the rioting masses caused when they couldn't take it any more (That's an argument the individualistic self-serving scum can understand, but it'll typically just make them want to give their thugs bigger jackboots).

Know your audience and argue from a perspective that isn't tied to false associations.

Put a hundred people on a deserted island, and the natural state is freedom,

. . . and eventual cannibalism? Shit dude, you need to work on your use-cases.

I did a lot of research on VPNs and wanted to get something that actually worked in China without throwing my money away.
