    Why - because they kept hiking the rates for it. When I called to see if we could lower the bill they said they could add phone service for $29.99 a month. I told them "What are you trying to get me to cut the cord completely?"

    And fyi it's Cox Communications. Now I read Susan Crawford's "Captive Audience" and in it she says the cable providers overcharge like mad for net service. For example she said the actual cost to provide data on Comcast network was $2 per month so why are they charging closet to $100 a month. Same is true for Cox too.

    Interesting take on this. My take - they wear uniforms, have official looking badges etc. So if it walks like a duck and so on. But here's the thing they're not law enforcement - so heap as much derision on them as one can.

    On the Fermi Paradox when the Drake Equation - more of the variables in that one are getting filled in all the time. Last pass at it shows at a minimum 10,000 possible intelligent species out there in the universe. It's just the distances between us and them is mind boggling long.

    The sun is also pretty active in the RF field too. All stars are for that matter.

    But the thing is, as I stated earlier RF power falls at the square of the distance from the transmitter. So our average exposure is likely sub 1W. Not enough to heat up anything.

    Well some I.T. people can do the "You can pay this or you can pay that" pretty well. I got really good at making comparisons in cost over my career.

    When I worked for the RI Sec of State - our public computers ran a Linux distro that wiped on shut down.

    Well if you're doing it right you just have their My Documents or Documents folder pointed at a file server. But that opens up its own can of worms.

    Well the way it works in state government is mostly no AD or servers for file store. At least from my experience.

    I do wish we'd bring back the iron maiden, or even the rack. Those were most effective. Tarring and feathering worked well too.

    That they're still running Windows XP. Or that they haven't installed patches, nor trained their users. And yeah - I pretty much guarantee it's all a Microsoft shop which means even their servers likely got hit.

    Well - amateur radio goes a bit further plus we've got repeaters everywhere. That being said it also is used by local emergency management as they know their current communication system is just one big power failure from being non-operational.

  22. The people doing the swatting are idiots. If you're gonna misuse an instrument of state use it to creative purpose. For example you could swat the more idiotic politicians in the region. That would be great fun too especially if someone could tap their in-house camera systems.

    Maybe then we'd get them to pass legislation ending the trusted CLID business.

  24. It's because congress, and even state legislatures don't have the vision to see that software and training might be necessary. And a bloated enterprise like Homeland Security and TSA - well they can just barely do security theater. So while a legislative body might pass a feel good that the electronic encryption on a passport is secure - they completely forgot about funding to develop the software to read it.
