New Open Source 3D Printer Can Print Without Human Intervention (autodrop3d.com)

Slashdot reader mmiscool shares some videos about "the next step in 3D printing": Autodrop3d is an open source system that solves the problem of needing a human to remove a 3D print from its print bed. Implemented as an open source hardware and software system, it allows for web based, multi-user print queue, automatic notifications, and web-based CAD design tools to all be integrated in one open source system. There's a video that shows the hardware in operation and a link to the web site with a Git repository for the software and hardware components.
Autodrop3D is now raising money on Kickstarter, promising to show their support for open source innovation by "releasing all of our documentation, design files, and software prior to the end of this Kickstarter campaign."

And for $75 pledges, "we will 3D print an object of your choice and mail it to you.... You will also receive our heartfelt thanks."

    I found more useful to support this project on kickstarter that is going to leave to the public open documentation, than supporting Oculus that made some guys rich and sold all the assets to Facebook.

    My skull and bones still hold on to the fence as my flesh is burned from what was left of my body, but fortunately I can just 3d print out new skin an organs again, an we all lived happily ever after.

      I think the reprap is far from complete. Personally, I think something like petman being able to run all of the machines and perform the assembly required to create itself is a lot closer.

      Trying to make a self reproducing box is a silly and futile endeavor and people have been looking at the problem inside out.

    We need heavy regulation of 3D printers. Normal 2D printers have software to prevent the printing of counterfeit money. We need similar regulations on 3D printers, though not for counterfeit money. It's well known that 3D printers can print guns that are actually able to fire. It's likely that 3D printers could also print other dangerous accessories such as bump stocks. There's no good reason that software shouldn't be able to detect if you're printing a gun part and refuse to do so. If 2D printers have security measures that prevent the printing of counterfeit money, 3D printers can certainly have the capability to prevent guns and gun accessories from being printed. The project in the article is certainly interesting, but I hope it fails to reach its goal on Kickstarter. Until security measures are implemented to prevent the printing of firearms and accessories like bump stocks, they will be a hindrance to any gun regulations designed to prevent mass shootings. This particular product is especially dangerous because, due to the open nature of the system, it's going to be relatively easy for criminals to circumvent any measures to impede firearm printing. We need more regulation of 3D printers and open source products like this should be banned for our safety.

      Regulating these is about as relevant to gun control as regulating hand drills and files.
      You can make a gun or a bump stock or whatever that will fire with either one, and neither of them is much good at it. If anything, the hand drill will get you a much better gun, and possibly with less messing around.

      But think about it, the guns aren't the problem, if you can do this, you can start 3d printing CD cases, and what are people going to put in those if not stolen music, and that'll be the end of the music industry (again), the RIAA must seek to regulate this terrible blight on our lives.

      The RIAA is safe, even the best commercial-grade 3D printers have nowhere near the ability to 3D-print a compact disc. So while pirated CD jewel cases are possible, the RIAA can still rip us off by mandating taxes on blank CDs via their preferred corrupted congressmen.

      the problem is it's too hard to program a simple 3d printer to know what a bump stock or gun part is and it's too trivial to modify a design if it's been blacklisted. Money has a hard design that's accepted. Everyone trying to make money is going for the literal same design. anything close triggers your printer (and i hope not because that's annoying) but it's easy enough to solve. You can't do that with a gun part.

      Still requires tons of human intervention for an FDM printer. I did this about a year ago. Designed a nice dildo in Solidworks and spent weeks trying to get it to print right on my prusa i3. It was such a HUGE dildo that layers separated no matter what I did. It's longer than it is thick, so once you get about 3/4 up the shaft, bad things happen. I eventually made things work, but there was more manual work. I had a lot of sanding and filling in with acetone and waiting and waiting and waiting before I could get a decent smooth surface. What you prolly don't realize about the rectum is how sensitive it is and a fingernail or gain of sand can be devastation.

    Good idea? Sure. I hope they are successful. However, this only addresses one of many problems in automated printing.

    Slashdot worthy? No. Props to whomever got this kickstarter posted here. I'll watch your marketing career with great interest.

      Agreed. Am I missing something? All this machine does is scrape the model from the base plate. What about all the other human interactions? Does this machine cut away the print supports or the raft? Does it monitor the print and then stop the print if there is an error? After an error, does it pause to recalibrate itself?

      automated filament change from a pallete of spools, or dynamic rgb-like mixing (like I think shapeways or somebody out there can do, but presumably very nontrivial to accomplish (yet)). Of course I'm a noob and haven't figured out proper spooling yet (i think i saw some design for an automatic spool turner which I can see being a solution, but presumably there are better, perhaps with integrated humidity control spool/s container)

      It is curious how slowly the tech is progressing given how promising it is. But the same kind of disruptive progress curve we saw with general purpose computing and networking, I still suspect we'll soon see with 3d printing. Or perhaps 3d printing is a matrix overlord addition to the timeline.

    Whenever I get a new 3D printer I smear down a layer of coconut oil on the desk underneath the whole unit. It doesn't take much, just a tablespoon is enough. That way after you print your first plastic tugboat and it looks like the same crap you got from the last one you can just slide the whole printer into the trashcan and haul it away. No human needs to remove the tugboat.

    I admit I'm certainly not the person using his 3D-printer very heavily, but is there really a market for that? Personally, I am kinda wary to leave the 3D printer alone while it's working anyway.

      Is it possible you are holding it wrong?

      I had the problem of my 3D printer falling over, bursting into flames, and then sinking into the swamp until I figured this out.
