New Cyber Attacks Hit Airport, Metro in Ukraine (reuters.com)

Cyber attacks hit Ukraine's Odessa airport and the metro system in Kiev on Tuesday, with the state-run Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) saying a new wave of hacks was hitting the country and asking transport networks to be on particular alert. From a report: Ukraine was the chief victim of a major cyber attack earlier this year, and the government had warned on Oct. 13 that another strike might be coming. "We ask the owners of telecommunication systems, other information resources, transport infrastructure first of all, as well as ordinary internet users, to comply with stricter cyber security requirements," CERT-Ukraine said in a statement. The cyber police and the infrastructure ministry said that Tuesday's strikes did not appear to constitute a mass attack. The central bank said the banking system was working normally. "We report that the IT system of Odessa international airport has been hit by a hacker attack. All services of the airport are working in a stricter mode," the airport said in a statement.

      You know Russia always screams like it's been gut-shot whenever it kicks the crap out of somebody. And you know there's no way to verify whether there's been any actual damage.

      What I pointed out is the way "journalism" works here in Slashdot and a comment without back up, without even matches the content of the article it tried to mention, was moderated "insightful".

      Russia is really good at the misinformation game. But you already know that.

      You may be right or not. When ever you have a proof, show it.
      But by your logic, if Russia is not the victim of this cyber attack, clearly Russia's behind this, if it is the victim, clearly Russia stages a false-flag. But you already know that.

      Not exactly false flag, Gucci. Nice attempt at mis-defining what's happening, though.

      As you probably know, the top guy at Interfax, the Russian company targeted by the same hackers, isn't exactly close to Putin. Three Interfax journalists have been murdered by Putin's thugs. And the Interfax CEO is under 24-hour guard. He has also structured Interfax so that killing him won't turn it over to a Putin satrap, and he's sent his daughter abroad where she's less likely to be kidnapped.

      So while Russia is weeping crocodile tears about how it's also a victim of the same virus as the one attacking Ukrainian targets, the only actual Russian target is being run by a guy who's well up there on Putin's sh^t list.

      My original post pointed out that in the summary of Slashdot article found nowhere on the original article, the title here is misleading. Report, quoting what it is, is journalism. Get it!?
      All you throwing here is your assumption, that's not my interest, that does not have anything to do with my original post. Understand!?

      More than half the victims were in Russia, followed by Ukraine, Bulgaria, Turkey and Japan, according to ESET.

      Your English suffers when you're angry. Also, seem unaware that Putin was oozing in to replace Yeltsin at just the time of those killings. Within three years Yeltsin was a memory, his supporters in the journalism community were muzzled or dead and his oligarch friends had been replaced by Putin's oligarch friends.

      So if you want to throw around words like "bullshit" I feel entirely comfortable asking you how Putin's dick tastes.

    It's been a while, but I have been there. It was pretty old when I was last there, although I read that they are building a new terminal. Odessa isn't a particularly busy airport so it probably makes safer test for any hackers (fewer flights mean fewer victims if it causes an airplane crash). Kiev's main airport KBP should definitely be on the lookout. As a point of interest, an Anonymous Coward posted about the "Gay Jew conspiracy" and Russian trolls, but note that Odessa does actually have some direct flights to Israel. The city of Uman is about halfway between Kiev and Odessa and both the Kiev and Odessa airports have direct flights to Israel and get a decent number of pilgrims who visit a grave in Uman of a rabbi important to Hassidic Judaism.

      Been there as well and I am surprised. The metro in Kiev is ancient, in a shoddy state and predates the word "cyber" so I cannot really think of any target for a cyberattack there beside its official website, whatever it would be.

    Did this kind of hacking ever happen with manned radar stations?? I'm pretty sure that thousands of fields that are maturing to ripeness with the same potential problem when robotics kick in. Human beings do have SOME value.
