Russian Hackers Targeted More Than 200 Journalists Globally (apnews.com)

The Associated Press: Russian television anchor Pavel Lobkov was in the studio getting ready for his show when jarring news flashed across his phone: Some of his most intimate messages had just been published to the web. Days earlier, the veteran journalist had come out live on air as HIV-positive, a taboo-breaking revelation that drew responses from hundreds of Russians fighting their own lonely struggles with the virus. Now he'd been hacked. The Associated Press found that Lobkov was targeted by the hacking group known as Fancy Bear in March 2015, nine months before his messages were leaked. He was one of at least 200 journalists, publishers and bloggers targeted by the group as early as mid-2014 and as recently as a few months ago. The AP identified journalists as the third-largest group on a hacking hit list obtained from cybersecurity firm Secureworks, after diplomatic personnel and U.S. Democrats. About 50 of the journalists worked at The New York Times. Another 50 were either foreign correspondents based in Moscow or Russian reporters like Lobkov who worked for independent news outlets. Others were prominent media figures in Ukraine, Moldova, the Baltics or Washington.

      Yes, but the largest single group in the target list were New York Times reporters (and I assume that many of the other "foreign journalists based in Moscow" were probably American), so I'd say that America is pretty high on Russia's hit list.

    How many has the CIA hacked so far?

    Remember, this very alleged action could be the work of the CIA. They have "impersonated" nation states before.

      That's right, there's no evidence that Russian hackers exist, let alone go round hacking journalists or the DNC or anyone at all. President Putin says he doesn't do that kind of thing and his word is good enough for me, even if he did have his fingers crossed at the time.

      Lobokov is a Russian journalist who is sometimes critical of the Russian government. How does the *prior probability* that the FSB might want to leak embarrassing information on him compare to the prior probability that the CIA would?

      This is typical conspiracy theorist thinking: choose a culprit, and then argue from the *possibility* of their having done it, ignoring that it would actually be against their interests.

      Of course hacking journalists is evil. The attempt to excuse the transgressions by one group by pointing out similar deeds of an opposing group is the problem here. I am quite aware of the evidence of the many unethical practices of the CIA, that is why I asked it to be posted to separate article.

      Let's not forget that the Bush Administration was manufacturing the lies in the first place. They wanted the war in the first place.
      They stumbled onto the information given out by the informant called "Curveball" and ran with it despite skepticism from the various Intelligence agencies.
      Information that proved to be false. Also, they found journalists who were willing to go along with them or wouldn't look to closely at the lies.

      All contradictory journalism was condemned. Unfortunately for war supporters, they didn't have the term "fake news" to use.

      We are now still enduring the consequence of that rush to war. In a hundred years, historians may well view the 2nd Iraq War as the lead up
      to America's decline and fall as a superpower.

      And Vladimir Putin is trying to help hurry that decline along!

      The origins of the Iraq War actually date back to at least the first Bush administration and Kuwait. After Iraq invaded Kuwait and we helped liberate it, many in Bush's administration called on him to keep pushing on into Iraq and topple Saddam Hussein. Bush Sr rightly saw that this would lead to a quagmire and refused to do so. Many of those warmongers found places in Bush Jr's administration and pushed for the Iraq War again after 9-11. This time, unfortunately, the Bush in office wasn't smart enough to see through the lies and approved the Iraq War. Had he been as good as his father, he would have rejected these calls, would have concentrated on Afghanistan and Al Qaeda/the Taliban, and might have ended the conflict much sooner.

      The origins of the Sunni/Shia war date back to about the year 850AD.

      Prior to the current flare up, it was last seen in the Iran/Iraq war that was managed (stalemated) under Reagan. By the same people that did the 'mideast' for Bush 2.

      Getting two enemies (basically Iran backed Shias, and Saudi backed Sunnis) to fight each other is a great outcome. So long as we can keep them fighting and stalemated, they are occupied.

      Of course nobody can say this outloud in DC or it doesn't work...

      This is 100% bullshit but typical of those who neither understand or are willing to do the slightest amount of investigation into the subject. Marching into Baghdad and anywhere else in the country that wasn't already occupied by coalition military units would have created no "quagmire". Unless you consider the "highway of death" a quagmire. Bush stopped because he didn't want the "international coalition" to fracture. That was the worst decision a US President has made since Bill Clinton tried to re-define sex. Bush's mistake was not flattening Iraq to the point where there would not have been enough people still walking around to create any resistance groups. And for giving two shits about an "international coalition", whose job was basically holding photo-ops way behind the front lines. The only other country who contributed any meaningful military power was Britain. And Britain's support was there because they faced total defeat once before and understand the importance of making sure they allie with the most powerful country they can find for the ultimate security insurance. And for the US decision to halt the hostilities to assuage the "international community" sensibilities they US and Iraqi citizens got shafted. It was the "international community" who actively assisted Sadaam Hussein in violating every single line item on the Iraqi surrender agreement. The 2003 war would never had happened if the US sealed the deal in the first Iraqi war and if the "international community" had not went out their way to rape the oil for food program to supply the Iraqi government with hard cash which was spent building palaces instead of food. However, the "international community" are finally getting their just rewards after Trump was elected. A US President's open disdain for the "international community" is long overdue. And Trump would have never won the election if there were not a sizeable number of US voters who also hold the "international community" in contempt. Trump has a way of reminding the world that they need the US a hell of a lot more than the US needs them. Trump announces the US recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the Palestinians announce they no longer want the US involved in negotiating a peace settlement. I would say this is a big win for the US. The US loses a meaningless UN vote on the matter while reminding those who voted against the US that any US foreign aid coming there way may be effected. And then the US unanimously wins a binding vote in the UN Security council to
      pile on further sanctions for NK.

    Political veteran Paul Manafort is hired to help the Trump campaign manage the delegate process for the Republican National Convention. He is recommended by Trump confidante Roger Stone (New York Times, March 28, 2016). Before joining the campaign, Manafort lobbied on behalf of Oleg Deripaska, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin. That deal followed a memo from Manafort in which he offered a plan that could "greatly benefit the Putin Government." His relationship with Deripaska ended in 2009 (Associated Press, March 22, 2017).     Donald Trump, Jr., Manafort and son-in-law Jared Kushner meet at Trump Tower with a Kremlin-connected attorney named Natalia Veselnitskaya. Veselnitskaya's efforts to reverse a law passed in 2012 sanctioning Russians suspected of human rights violations at some point drew the attention of the FBI. The meeting was not initially reported to the government by Kushner as required when he took a position with the administration (Times, July 8, 2017). After the meeting was originally reported, Trump, Jr. admitted that the pretext for the conversation was that he believed Veselnitskaya to have information incriminating Hillary Clinton (Times, July 9, 2017).

    $2K in tax savings won't offset the added $8K/yr I'm forced to pay for the ACA. That's addition to what I was paying before. Zero health issues. Zero medications. 38% increase from 2017 to 2018.

    THAT is why I voted against Hillary. Actually, I was a **never** Trump person, but I was a NEVER-AGAIN Clinton person since the mid-90s.

    I had hopped that Trump would have stepped down by now. He doesn't want the job. He just wanted to hype that he was "the bestestestest president E-V-A-R!"

    But we all know - his farts smell.
