Germany Says Government Network Was Breached (bbc.com)
An anonymous reader shares a report from The Wall Street Journal (Warning: source may be paywalled; alternative source): German authorities said on Wednesday they were investigating a security breach of the government's highly protected computer network. The country's intelligence agencies were examining attacks on more than one government ministry, the interior ministry said, adding that the affected departments had been informed and that the attack had been isolated and brought under control. Earlier on Wednesday, the German news agency DPA reported that German security services had discovered a breach of the government's IT network in December and traced it back to state-sponsored Russian hackers. German companies have been the target of sustained attacks by state-sponsored hackers, mainly believed to be Chinese. In 2015, the Bundestag, parliament's lower house, suffered a extensive breach, leading to the theft of several gigabytes of data by what German security officials believe were Russian cyberthieves. Hackers believed to be part of the Russia-linked APT28 group sought to infiltrate the computer systems of several German political parties in 2016, Germany's domestic intelligence agency said in 2016.
Uber Alles, bitte. Either that or Hope Hicks porn is trending, either way the internet is broken from now on.
Must have been Hillary Clinton. Russia is awesome since they helped us win the election!
Erm.. I mean, since they didn't help us win the election! That's just crazy talk! Russia would never do anything like that! They're cool, man! Don't be a narc!
Good thing this happened before GDPR kicked in, otherwise they would have to pay a truly massive fine!
Bad Slashdot, you only do this because of the guaranteed clicks from all the fine impartial folks mocking the idea that Russians go round hacking computers.
They should consult an astrologist.
They should not have returned to windows and stayed with Linux.
No surprise Russia abandoned daylight saving time, in that way they have a full hour more of hacking the world. It seems they are not doing anything else anymore, probably even Vodka consumption plummeted .... Russians, Russians everywhere!
Has Russia already hacked Mars? Was a Russian hack involved in the assassination of Lincoln and Kennedy? Hang on, now I think there is a clear Russian connection to my latest bluescreen ....
Easy to discover Bear code litter left all over the once pristine German server again?
An ip range that can only be Russian?
Was it a work day and within working hours in Russia?
So what do the Germans do after their cyber failure and having "suffered a extensive breach"?
Call in experts to do secret cyber things and never tell Russia that it did an "extensive breach"?
Tell the media in 30-50 years how cyber experts countered Russia?
Go running to the media in real time to tell of the "extensive breach" with no regard for German cyber security?
Reading about "security" issues in real time is not allowed if anything was really security related.
Domestic spying is now "Benign Information Gathering"

New NSA leaks show how US is bugging its European allies
NSA tapped German Chancellery for decades, WikiLeaks claims
Usually, ISIS or other islamistic terrorists leave their passports – so the Russians must somehow have learned from them to leave a digital trace or fingerprint that allows the clever German authorities (paid by my taxes, I'm sooo proud of them, really!) to identify the attackers the same authorities that did not realize that they've been hacked for about a year (for the second time, by the way). Is anybody else feeling treated like a stupid shitbag by stupid shitbags here?
I guess NSA is also state sponsored right? and it was listening Merkel's office? now how is this more sinister than that?
Let's be realistic: Is there any network in the world that is not compromised on in one why or another?
I guess there are people enough claiming that their network has never been hacked but I really believe that they are hacked but they just don't know it.
The whole internet, and by extension the whole computing community, has become so complex that it's unavoidable that there is a security problem somewhere in the chain. Your DSL modem, you PC with Intel CPU, your windows operating systems, your wifi setup, the hotspot, some nice java script,....
