A Short Documentary About 81-Year-Old Commodore Amiga Artist, Programmer Samia Halaby (youtube.com)

erickhill shares a short documentary about Samia Halaby, an 81-year-old Commodore Amiga artist and programmer: Samia Halaby is a world renowned painter who purchased a Commodore Amiga 1000 in 1985 at the tender age of 50 years old. She taught herself the BASIC and C programming languages to create "kinetic paintings" with the Amiga and has been using the Amiga ever since. Samia has exhibited in prestigious venues such as The Guggenheim Museum, The British Museum, Lincoln Center, The Chicago Institute of Art, Arab World Institute, Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Sakakini Art Center, and Ayyam Gallery just to name a few.

I second the notion. Amiga Forever is based on WinUAE. But it has enough added content that it's well worth the price. Fortunately for her Amiga Forever includes at least one environment which gives very accurate emulation of the A1000 with the same timing, video limitations and features, and even sounds. I suspect she'd feel right at home with it unless she wants the interlace flicker as part of her environment. (And I bet even that could be at least partially emulated on a good enough base Windows machine.) Mike and his company Cloanto have done a wonderful job. Not quite. Things have gotten both better and worse since then.

By 2002 my Amiga 3000 was such a Frankenstein thing where so much of the custom hardware had been replaced: it had an add-on CPU board, a graphics card (obsoleting the neat-o 1980s custom chips), an ethernet card, even a sound (!!) card! All this stuff was way better than the original hardware. But the OS was stagnant, and new buyers when they slowly, eventually came along, didn't do anything useful with it. The proprietary software is what eventually killed the Amiga, years after Commodore died. Or at least for me, it's what made me finally give up.

Because I did not own it. It was proprietary, so therefore, poorly maintained (just as Windows and MacOS are so poorly maintained, but the Amiga's OS was even worse in that regard at the time, if you can imagine such a thing).

So while you owned the Amiga hardware, you never owned the software. To be fair, the software was fucking amazing and actually more of a draw (at least by the 1990s) than the hardware. (Though I understand how in the 1980s some people might have been damn impressed by the hardware too.)

ANYWAY: the lessons (and really, they were partly inspired by my Amiga experiences) have been:

      1) Settle for "mainstream" hardware, even if it's not quite the best. You want commodity stuff where you can always easily replace a dying component. While you want quality, of course, you should also look at every piece of hardware as disposable and replaceable (and then hope, purely for your wallet's sake, that you never need to actually replace it). This is where x86 boxes totally win, and I can't wait for it to some day happen to handhelds (phones).

      2) Software must be free. Availability of maintenance is a requirement for any software that you care about or depend on. You can violate this for things that aren't important (e.g. proprietary games are ok) but a proprietary OS is unusable, as are many proprietary applications. This is where GNU/Linux so brutally slays.

If you violate either of the above two guidelines, you suffer. Suffer enough and you'll start to spot the pattern. And for all I loved it, my dying Amiga experiences are what helped me figure out the big mistake: weird hardware and unmaintainable software are for losers. If you can't maintain it, you don't own it.

Doing stuff in C was very common on Amiga. The basic was good enough to do much of what the artist did, but doing it in C you could make things smoother and use more capabilities. While today a lot of this seem like bog standard screensaver stuff, remember that these things were still new at the time and the graphics were things you'd otherwise only see on an expensive professional workstation.

What really made Amiga stand out is that it wasn't just a copy. It did a lot of things differently than how things were done in the home computer market. It didn't use your basic -bit pixels but used bit slices, which led to a different set of capabilities. It wasn't just a 16-bit upgrade over older single tasking DOS systems, it used multitasking (common in professional world but extremely rare for home computers), had a custom multithreaded GUI, and so forth.
