Google Maps Apps Add 'Mario Kart' Feature (wlwt.com)

An anonymous reader quotes WLWT News: Starting Saturday, "Mario Time" will be available on the Google Maps app for iOS and Android, letting you drive around town with Mario as your guide, cruising the app in a go-kart similar to the iconic "Mario Kart" video game. When users launch the latest version of the app, the feature is activated by tapping a "?" beside the start button normally used to start navigation.
It includes sound effects -- "Woo-hoo! Let's-a go!" says Mario -- and will be available for the next week. It's to commemorate "Mario Day" -- Mar.10 -- that magical time of year one Portland newspaper has described as "the most manufactured of corporate holidays," on which Nintendo lowers the price on their Super Mario Run app and offers other discounts.

Indeed. Go look up the numbers on how many accidents per year happen already by people staring at the red "push pin" icon for far too long, forcing people to drive off cliffs, into bodies of water, and into highly restricted military installations where they are shot on sight.

I've long argued the same position you hold, that GPS maps should be 100% free of all colors, shapes, sounds, and information. Anything more than a blank solid white or black screen is too much for some people to handle, and it's resulting in the deaths of billions of innocent lives every day.

Seriously, does this look like it is changing the future, or like a bunch of rich kids screwing around?

At this point I have no clue why people invest in google, they are no longer about doing good for humanity or offering us anything of much value. They have products that offer value but they drop like mayflies. One such project was a self powered system of balloons capable of being within 200 meters of target by rising or lowering to steer and provide wifi and cell phone coverage to areas which were otherwise unreachable, a noble and worthy project which we will never see or hear from again.

It would be better for the venture capitalists to go for those companies which are attempting to add value to the world with something tangible, I had read about a gentleman who developed a light for developing countries which worked on a system of weights. There are water filtration efforts, solar, energy storage, wind turbine and water turbine technologies that need to bust out into the lime light. Also things like CRISPR can be utilitzed to create new and exciting futures and possibilities.

So much waste and so little to show for it all, it is humbling not how much we have achieved but how much we could have if we just weren't screwing around so much.
