Trump Officials Planning Escalation of US-China Tech Trade War (arstechnica.com)
An anonymous reader quotes a report from Ars Technica: The Trump administration is looking to widen its trade war with China by restricting Chinese access to U.S. technology, according to reports from the Wall Street Journal and Reuters. "The Treasury Department is crafting rules that would block firms with at least 25 percent Chinese ownership from buying companies involved in what the White House calls 'industrially significant technology,'" the Wall Street Journal says. A separate proposal would institute beefed-up export controls preventing Chinese companies from buying these technologies from U.S. firms. The policies could be announced as soon as this week, the Journal says. In the past, the Trump administration has blocked multiple attempts by Chinese companies to buy U.S. semiconductor firms and imposed a sweeping export ban on Chinese smartphone maker ZTE after ZTE was caught selling U.S. technology to Iran and North Korea -- though the administration recently lifted the ban.
Useless trade wars have cost me nearly $50K this week. CEOs are almost all universally bad at economics, especially if they have a degree in economics.
What an outrageous comment!!! I'll have you know that the current POTUS is one of the greatest and most stable business geniuses of all time.
Q: We are "protecting an industry" from whom exactly?
A: Other companies who can provide the same or better service for the same or better price.
Q: And how are we doing that?
A: By raising taxes so that the consumer has to pay more for products.
Q: Then we are not generating jobs or products, we're simply transferring wealth from one group (certain consumers) to another group (certain businesses and industries), right?
A: Exactly.
No, dumbshit. The opioid epidemic in the Trump states is home grown.

You are welcome on my lawn.
"Ironically, the biggest supporters of free trade were the Big Cotton slaveowners."
Right, the Democrats.
Somebody forgets their history lessons. Try looking up who passed the first Tariff Act, the Embargo Act, the American System, the Civil War Tariffs and the policies of McKinley, Teddy Roosevelt and Hoover.
I see you've never heard of Bernie Sanders. You know, the guy that didn't get any superdelegate votes. You know, for that primary system they use to override popular opinion within their own party so that the party elite get to make all of the decisions, and fuck the rest.
Protectionism is the number one economic issue I end up bashing Democrats about here on slashdot. It's probably no coincidence that labor unions adore protectionism, mainly because, as I often say, it's not about the workers (who end up getting fucked anyways,) rather it's about getting more money and power for the mafi...I mean...union management.
And before Trump, I used to always get downmodded when I would explain why nobody wins when you use tariffs. Now all of a sudden the bad guy likes tariffs, suddenly Democrats hate them (but they still love Bernie, who still loves tariffs.) And no, I'm not a republican, or right wing, or anything else.
"pissing everyone around the world off"
Good it is long overdue. The US has made concession after concession when it comes to US trade and international relations policies. Lets have a show of hands. Who thinks China ever negotiates in good faith? The Chinese have manipulated their currency as a means to produce cheaper exports. The Chinese government subsidizes all sectors of their economy which also leads to cheaper exports. Any foreign country looking to have a presence in China are required to engage a Chinese partner which basically gives China legal access to any IP the foreign companies use in their products and services. And these Chinese partners are just Chinese government minders and censors in the companies they partner with. Europe's trade policies are an assault on any US corporations who want a presence in Europe. US imports are heavily taxed. Corporations such as Google, Facebook, and Twitter have to navigate draconian regulations that are basically a shakedown of any US corporation who has dared to make a profit. Europe was asleep at the wheel when the personal computing and Internet age started and have no companies capable of competing with MS, Apple, Facebook, Google, or any of the other globally successful US companies. And the European proles have no cause to call Americans stupid or ignorant. The EU directive to store EU citizen data on servers located in Europe to prevent the evil NSA from having access to the data. The NSA didn't and doesn't need to collect any of that data they can just ask the European intelligence agencies to hand over the data they have collected. As long as the data center communicates with the outside world it doesn't matter where the data is stored. But the European proles actually think their data is safe? Those stupid fucks should stop attacking the NSA and start attacking their own intelligence agencies.
Other countries aren't mad at Trump because they think their trade policies with the US are fair they are attacking Trump for pointing out the inequities. Europe and China expects the US to treat them as disadvantaged children who deserve more concessions from the big ole US. China still acts like it is 1973 and Europe has had their hands out since 1945. If the EU wants to start a trade war then they will also need to start building up their militaries because the US will cease subsidizing their military protection. And god bless the media. They are shaping the world one headline at a time. If someone published a photo of Trump walking across the Potomac River the headline would be "Trump can't swim!".
Racism? Pissing off non-Americans? Really? How cute and naive.
You have obviously never left the US and have a truly bizarre view of other countries.
On the whole, the US is easily one of the most diverse, least racist, and most welcoming countries on the planet.
Get out more. And no the next town over doesnt count as foreign.
