Microsoft Won't Force You To Use the New Skype Just Yet (neowin.net)
A few weeks ago, Microsoft launched Skype version 8.0 to replace Skype classic, or version 7. The company initially said that Skype classic would stop working on September 1st, but today, it extended the deadline and said it would continue to support the older application for the time being. Neowin reports: Spotted by Brad Sams of Thurrott.com, the information was posted as an update to a support forum that originally said when Skype v7 would be killed off. The update says the following: "Based on customer feedback, we are extending support for Skype 7 (Skype classic) for some time. Our customers can continue to use Skype classic until then. Thanks for all your comments - we are listening. We are working to bring all the features you've asked for into Skype 8. Watch this space." Microsoft didn't provide a new end of life date for Skype v7, but there's no doubt that it's still coming. Eventually, you'll have to move to Skype v8, or the UWP app if you're on Windows 10.
Skype constantly fails for forcig me to restart the app or reboot. Just a horrible product.
Linux distros should have done this with systemd. Instead of forcing it on unwilling users, systemd should have been an optional addon for those who wanted it. Everyone else then wouldn't have had their Linux systems tainted by systemd.
I don't know anyone who still uses Skype. Everyone has moved to WhatsApp or Facebook's Messenger.
Circumcision is child abuse.
Listen to your enterprise and power users. Let us install Windows 7 for longer. I would love the new Threadripper 2 supported with Windows 7.
... when they shut off 7, I'll be off skype.
Last week I tried v8. And was relieved that there was still some place to download v7. What remained of the user interface was a bad attempt to map a screen-limited smart phone app onto a desktop.
this backwards-ass program still doesn't allow you to paste images directly into a chat, instead they go as an attachment. No support for user-defined GIFs. etc.
I haven't used Skype in years, how are they going to force me to use it now?
Isn't everybody on Slack now?
When all you have is a hammer, every problem starts to look like a thumb.
Whatsapp is for kids who are SLIGHTLY less dumb than the FB morons.
I use it for international phone calls.
On Windows 10 you may not have to update, because the update and subsequent spontaneous restart will be automated for you
people still use slack?
I've hated every new version of skype since Microsoft took it over. They stopped supporting legacy Android and now force me to carry around a giant 7" x86 tablet instead of a Droid phone(wifi only)...
I pay $60-$65 a year for skype unlimited local/ld(America/Canada) calling and a real dialin phone number. Myself and 1-2 members of the family all use the same account and any one of us can answer calls/take messages. Does anyone else provide an equal service for the same price or less(or near)? Supporting Legacy Android, windows, linux?
Closest I found was MagicJack but they don't let multiple devices to login at once without paying for each(which quickly makes them more expensive, and stability issues)
Suggestions and prices(again dial in for people with real phones who want to call us, and unlimited(essentially) LD calling to Canada/USA for ~$60/year..
I fixed the subject line for you.
At least with Gentoo Linux, you can decide whether you want systemd or not. It works fine either way.
I tried using it a couple of months ago and I couldn't remember my password. Part of the "prove to us you own the account" process Microsoft has is "what is the last password you remember?" Well, deary, since there's only ever been one password on the account. if I could remember the last one I wouldn't have to be trying to reset it, now would I?
Google voice?
Dropped it right then. Tried the "light" android version, moved to Telegram, haven't looked back.
Who still uses Skype? That is like using ICQ. Use Discord.
People are reticent to upgrade because the new version is yet another triumph of Obfuscation Of Functionality for Microsoft.
Let's hide shit under nearly invisible screen cues with no tooltips and watch people twist in the wind! WOO! FUNNY!

THANK GOD!!!
Microsoft can't and won't force me to use any version of skype. After MS bought skype and made some UI changes that made it harder to use, I just switched to facetime. "Problem" solved. Even my Mom is getting an iphone, in part so she can use facetime with everyone else who has ditched skype after MS ruined the UI.
Skype circa 2011 was pretty useable. It's been destroyed since then by UI mismanagement. I still prefer windows over apple OS and I use a windows computer instead of a mac, but for video chat and conferencing I've gone completely to facetime for no reason other than the skype UI has been wrecked since MS bought it.
Forcing users to "upgrade" to their latest crummy version is just one more push to switch services. There are plenty of alternatives.
I thought that the Linux/Android version of Skype was Microsoft's attempt to move people onto the Windows platform. And then they released the same shitty layout on Windows.
Are they going to reinstate the APIs on which my Skype certified DECT handset depends?
Yeah, thought not.
Another perfectly functional load of hardware gone to landfill.
WhatsApp... Does that even have a desktop version? Without it it won't matter much in a business context for at least a few years. If it does, it's not advertised enough.
Look up Web Whatsapp.
Now there's a huge difference.
When you use Web Skype, the WebApp is connecting directly to the Microsoft servers. You basically get in your browser the same thing as in the new gen applications. (The new gen Skype application is basically a wrapper around the web app).
It's basically "your browser -> Microsoft's Skype server".
In WhatsApp's case, it's a bit different. You still need a smartphone app (either Android or iOS), that app still makes connection to the Facebook servers itself. But when you log into WhatsApp Web, the phone app goes into server mode, and relays data (through cloud servers) to the web app.
It's supposed to be "your browser -> some relay server -> the app running on your smartphone -> the official Facebook's WhatsApp server".
It's supposed to be done for two reason :
- to enforce the approach that WhatsApp always had about 1 instance on 1 smartphone linked to 1 cellphone number. (they don't want cellphone-less instances)
- the axolotl end-to-end encryption that Facebook has rolled both into WhatsApp and into their own inhouse Messenger *is end-to-end*. You need the smartphone to do the end-point decryption and eventually re-encrypt the data for the webapp. The webapp cannot directly connect the the WhatsApp server, because that server doesn't have any access to the cleartext.
WhatsApp is completely irrelevant (why is it even alive? Teens?)
Actually, all the youngs I've seen seem to be on snapchat nowadays.

Unfortunately, SIP interface is scratchy and gross, with huge drops. It sounds a bit like a 60 year old record that's been poorly cared for
Which means you need a cell phone to really work it, cause the app won't ring without a forwarding number or SIP login
It is integrated into the taskbar, uses less dead space, faster UI.
Forced telemetry in Windows 10 and other products. They've stated they record all calls. Why use them?
Can someone tell me how to uninstall Skype? I did not install it. It just appeared one day like some kind of virus.
At work we use Skype for Business, which is OK (considering we used to use Jabber). But because we have some contract teams that aren't on the corporate network, some genius decided that we can use regular Skype to chat with them as a 'group chat'. AND.. we are piloting MS Teams as well because regular Skype is so unstable and just stops working randomly all the time - which kind of defeats the purpose of having a persistent group chat. So I have THREE different chat programs, and all of them are pretty awful.
Many years ago I used MindAlign at a company for group chat and it was fantastic. It was basically a prettied up IRC server/client. Then MS bought them and rebranded it the genius name of "MS Group Chat". Then of course, they had to make it "better" and over a few iterations ruined everything useful about it. Now they are touting MS Teams as the way to go, because... cloud... so we can monitor everything you do.
My beliefs do not require that you agree with them.
