Apple Recalls a Number of iPhone 8 Devices For Manufacturing Defect (digitaltrends.com)

Apple is recalling a "small percentage" of iPhone 8 devices due to an issue with the logic board. The affected devices may suddenly freeze or restart -- symptoms that may show up at any time. Digital Trends reports: Apple has launched a repair program for the iPhone 8, and whether your device is exhibiting issues or not, it may be a part of the recall. It's important to note that only iPhone 8 models are being recalled here -- the iPhone 8 Plus seems to have sidestepped the issue completely. Specifically, it seems like some iPhone 8 models manufactured between September 2017 and March 2018, and sold in the U.S., New Zealand, Australia, China, India, and Japan, are affected by the issue. If you bought your phone during that time and in one of those regions, you may well be affected. If you have an iPhone 8, you can copy and paste the serial number in Apple's iPhone 8 checker tool. There are a few ways to get your device fixed if it is affected. "First, you could go to an Apple Authorized Service Provider -- you can find one here," reports Digital Trends. "Second, you could go straight to an Apple Store. Last but not least, you could contact Apple Support, and they'll send you a prepaid shipping box for you to send in your iPhone for repair."

Compare the specs... the 7 is slightly thinner, is lighter, same RAM, same screen resolution, more SSD choices, stronger battery(!), and is cheaper (for same storage). The 8 has some added features, like new CPU, but do you need them provided the battery will last less?

  But it seems that Apple has discovered that theur iPhone 8 is one big defect, they are just trying to hide behind the excuse that it is a manufacturing defect..
  Now if they could just realise the same is the case with all their other products and start pulling their s*** together, so they could sell reasonable devices at reasonable prices... manufactured in the US... with a REASONABLE profit margin... not their current completely insane profit margin...
  Not only do they sell antiquated hardware at insane prices, they sell severely handicapped antiquated hardware at insane prices... I am simply baffled, why anyone would ever buy anything from Apple... Even IF they were better at privacy than others, then the sheer amount of user abuse on all other levels, makes it not worth it by a long shot...

  Android is heavily fragmented, and every manufacturer mucks with it to put their own shit in it to make sure to track you and monetize you.
  You buy an Apple phone, and you know what you're getting. You buy an Android, and who know what the hell else you're getting ... from pre-installed malware to analytics/data collection you didn't agree to. Oh, and don't forget devices which are DOA upon arrival because you'll never get an OS update.
  No, I don't want your store, your payment system, your custom interfaces, or your fucking digital assistant.
  Me, I'm over Android. When I replace my Nexus 7 it will be with some form of iPad.
  To me, Android has simply failed to live up to its promise, and as such, I don't care about it anymore.
  There's dozens, if not hundreds, of effectively different versions of Android in various state of support. And yet, all of my Apple devices just keep working.

  They instituted AND ANNOUNCED a multinational recall program that will no doubt cost them millions up millions of dollars, JUST to provide an "excuse".
  If it was a DESIGN defect, then why are only certain regions and date-ranges affected?
  Sorry. This was either a coplanarity or contamination problem with the PCB and/or SoC, OR some sort of soldering issue. Same as with many products by many manufacturers for many years.
  Especially since that evil RoHS "no-stick" Solder...

  I am SURE you didn't watch this year's WWDC Keynote; but one of the first topics (if not THE first) was how they had SPECIFICALLY focused on PERFORMANCE of iOS 12 ON OLDER DEVICES.
  In fact, they used an iPhone 6 (which I happen to have), and the performance gains were QUITE impressive.
  And I guess that real-world tests with the Beta releases of iOS 12 seem to bear out these claims:

  Because it's the only halfway secure smartphone. If you disagree, please give examples of more secure smartphones. Don't forget that they need to be secure a couple of years into the future, not just at the moment of purchase, so that rules out almost all Android phones right away.

  I think that the biggest reason for me switching over to Apple was that you could expect the device to get software updates 4 years later. I used to use Motorola exclusively (stretching back well before smart phones even existed) and could get 5+ years out a phone. After everyone switched over to making smartphones, Motorola still made great devices (before they kept getting bought and sold to different companies on a regular basis anyhow) I found that it was hard to get 2 years out of a device before support dried up. Things have gotten slightly better since then in terms of being able to unlock the bootloader, or get a device that has a reasonable expectation of support beyond a couple of years, but Apple does a much better job making this less of a hassle for the end user.

  Except the casual user doesn't give a fuck about fragmentation. Most apps run from 5.0 and up, which covers practically all the users who use apps.
  The casual user doesn't give a fuck about manufacturers adding things to Android. As a matter of fact, evidence indicates most WANT it. Samsung is known for adding extra features and it's the number 1 premium Android smartphone. Samsung added a better payment system (a universal mag-stripe AND NFC based), my S5 (so like 4 years ago) has a power save feature that only now other manufacturers have caught up (although still arguable). They added the always-on display. The last 2 of these features were copied to the i-device ecosystem. I can even hotspot while connected to a wifi access point so I never have to do those annoying "registration" things more than once. The extras are apps and features that barely take up space on a 32GB/512GB device or can be disabled for those who care about it.
  You buy an i device, you get spyware built in (i ads or whatever it's being called now - or are you suggesting they're charging more for an inferior ad product?). You are strongly suggested to add a credit card (other methods are hidden or require a purchase) attached to your account, whereas google does not. Remember, if you believe what they say, you're not a "reasonable person" (that's what APL's lawyers say, not me. Google it) At least Google's quite a bit more open with what they do with your information.
  I could say "No, I don't want your store, your payment system, your custom interfaces, or your fucking digital assistant"... but I'm forced to use the thing even if there's better tech. Swipe keyboards finally came almost 5 years! I can also not live with the stupid numbers being hidden on the keyboard.
  Some phones never get OS updates because they're bottom of the barrel cheap phones. If you want a temporary/travel/"dangerous area" phone, why would you want to spend so much for a phone that's probably going to physically break or get stolen? Most people understand the more you pay, the more you get -- you don't apparently notice that. Practically all high end Android devices get at least 2 years of major feature updates, then a few more security updates. Compare to i OS's digital assistant, which you had to buy a new phone for even though there was no reason why it wasn't on older phones.
  FYI: I OS Pokemon go players that were playing perfectly fine can no longer play because Niantic was forced to stop older device support due to an APL restriction. So yeah, "just keep working"... until they decide not to LOL
  So sure, there's some points of pain with Android, but so does i OS. All of my Android devices "just keep working" too... and major components like the browser or camera get updated well past the OS updates. You can't say that about i devices -- it's either all or none.

  Sort of a sarcastic poke-fun but serious at the same time: what did they do to make things load noticably faster? What the hell were they doing that was causing loading the same apps between OSes that much better?
  Shouldn't you just be loading the important part of the image to memory and then executing? There's not much more you can do to speed it up (asides from caching)... but that requires extra space.

  It's funny you mention half-way secure. Android devices must be unlocked for it to reveal the contents of it's filesystem / APIs way back to Android 2.2. This is how it's always been. Meanwhile, when did I devices get that security patch that
  Pokemon Go players have a hell of a time trying to spoof without rooting/jb on Android, while i devices you just install an app and you're done.

It used to be the case that any problem with the Apple products was the customer's fault.
For example the phone did not get signal because the customer was holding it wrong.

  That's quite frankly a steaming pile of horse shit. I've used Apple products for close on 20 years and they have never given me a hard time over repairs and manufacturing defects. The last time was about a year ago was a keyboard change on my 12" MacBook. Once when I brought a MacBook Pro in for a HD upgrade they even swapped out the display while they had the thing in the shop because it had a manufacturing defect that made it cloudy.
