Ajit Pai Thanks Congress For Helping Him Kill Net Neutrality Rules (arstechnica.com)
FCC Chairman Ajit Pai today thanked Congress for preventing the U.S. government from enforcing net neutrality rules. "The Pai-led Federal Communications Commission repealed Obama-era net neutrality rules, but the repeal could have been reversed by Congress if it acted before the end of its session," reports Ars Technica. "Democrats won a vote to reverse the repeal in the Senate but weren't able to get enough votes in the House of Representatives before time ran out." From the report: "I'm pleased that a strong bipartisan majority of the U.S. House of Representatives declined to reinstate heavy-handed Internet regulation," Pai said in a statement marking the deadline passage today. Pai claimed that broadband speed improvements and new fiber deployments in 2018 occurred because of his net neutrality repeal -- although speeds and fiber deployment also went in the right direction while net neutrality rules were in place. "Over the past year, the Internet has remained free and open," Pai said, adding that "the FCC's light-touch approach is working." Pai didn't mention a recent case in which CenturyLink temporarily blocked its customers' Internet access in order to show an ad or a recent research report accusing Sprint of throttling Skype (which Sprint denies).
What's the downside of no Net Neutrality? Was the Internet a wasteland prior to 2015? Is the fact that Internet speeds are up 40% over the last year a bad thing? What did the brief, regulation-by-executive-directive Net Neutrality time bring?
Browsing at +1 - no ACs, I ignore their posts. So refreshing!
I know. But our friends on the left don't.
I have my own little troll contingent following me around... Most are AC, but I do have a 4 digit UID who's part of the group! They hate facts and logic that runs counter to their world-view of bicycles and unicorns for all...

"It's insane that the FCC (an unelected body) had the authority for something like that to begin with."
They constitutionally do not have that power. The problem is that many people, are suddenly & usually okay when agencies like this do make laws they DO approve of regardless of the constitutionality of them. Kinda like how many people approved of the creation of these laws but then scream that it was illegal to remove them... but like you said... how did they have that power in the first place?
You will find no end to the number of people more than willing to becoming intentionally ignorant and twist what the constitution means right to your face. This is why there is an effort to literally attempt to redefine what words mean slowly over time.
Here is a basic explain of how it happens. The original term for the word evil meant anything that was not desired. Meaning a lazy person is evil... because that behavior is not desired. But now... evil is usually reserved for only the absolute most despicable actions humans take. Most people would not call a person that constantly speeds an evil person though a millennia ago people would have, if they had speed limits.
Same goes for the Constitution. It says all laws can only come from the legislative Branch. Not from the courts, not from the Executive through EO or through any of the agencies that Congress creates. But many people will quickly twist the last sentence in Article 1 Section 8 to imply that Congress can create a department or officer capable of creating law completely undermining Section 1.
The constitution establishes the powers that government gets, meaning that if the power is not granted then they don't have it. It also establishes powers they are to never have like controlling your speech. But since people are more than willing to wipe their ass with the Constitution when it suits their politics the entire document is now worthless. Not a single second goes by where it is not being constantly ignored and the people just accept it, until something gets them all upset and then they think, NOW its okay to call it out... after never saying anything about all other other abuses that have occurred all ready.
I thank Ajit Pai for making Internet speeds 40% faster in the past year.
But thanks for the nonstop FUD, Beau. Whose payroll are you on again? Slashdot is owned by BizX which is a front for a bigger operation run by the Arabs. Would you care to explain your agenda?
What an adorable little socialist.
