NVIDIA Turing-Based GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Launched At $279 (hothardware.com)

MojoKid writes: NVIDIA has launched yet another graphics card today based on the company's new Turing GPU. This latest GPU, however, doesn't support NVIDIA's RTX ray-tracing technology or its DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) image quality tech. The new GeForce GTX 1660 Ti does, however, bring with it all of the other GPU architecture improvements NVIDIA Turing offers. The new TU116 GPU on board the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti supports concurrent integer and floating point instructions (rather than serializing integer and FP instructions), and it also has a redesigned cache structure with double the amount of L2 cache versus their predecessors, while its L1 cache has been outfitted with a wider memory bus that ultimately doubles the bandwidth. NVIDIA's TU116 has 1,536 active CUDA cores, which is a decent uptick from the GTX 1060, but less than the current gen RTX 2060. Cards will also come equipped with 6GB of GDDR6 memory at 12 Gbps for 288GB/s of bandwidth. Performance-wise, the new GeForce GTX 1660 Ti is typically slightly faster than a previous gen GeFore GTX 1070, and much faster than a GTX 1060. Cards should be available at retail in the next few days, starting at $279.

    Nvidia givth, and Nvidia taketh away. The card'll be useless for high end gaming in about 4-5 years for no other reason than it's missing 2gb of ram. Same as my 760 with it's 2gb of ram.

    They used to do this with bus widths but DDR5 is so fast now that doesn't work. Even 128-bit cards can crank out 60+ fps in a lot of games.

Seriously though, this is the first Turing card that's an okay upgrade, according to Anandtech this card is +36% perf, +12% price for a +21% price/perf improvement over the last gen. The RTX cards are a wash, more performance for more money. I really hope AMD can make a Zen-like comeback on the GPU side, right now their Radeon cards are aging as well as Bulldozer did...

      It is a mid-range card.
      Mid-range cards are similar to their high-end counterparts but with the expensive parts stripped off. RAM is expensive, and we don't really need more than 6GB now, so it makes perfect sense.
      If you want to keep your graphics card for more than 5 years of high-end gaming, you need the high-end graphics cards, and it is not specific to Nvidia.

      But it does mean that "future proof" is a term that does not apply to this card. Very shortly, 8 GB will be a minimum even for low end cards. The current #1 bestseller on Amazon is a Radeon 580 with 8GB, $190.

      The more I think about it, the more I see 6GB as a killer misfeature for a midrange card. Soon there will a bunch of premium games with texture assets targeted at 8GB cache. Not fitting in cache can actually be more of a problem for performance that cut down processing units or lower clocks.

      4-5 years? I think, anybody who gets this expecting it to be a high end card at a bargain prices is going to be having constant second thoughts about ram that will be less than even low end cards within a year.

      Define high-end gaming? Having every setting on max with 4K freesync display? Can I get "No shit Sherlock" for $5 please. It's NVIDIA's entry level gaming card. Just because you won't be able to play with the big boys and their "Ultra uber duber" setting on texture resolution in 4-5 years doesn't make this even remotely "gimped", and given the game developments in the past 5 years you sure as hell won't be missing much with the extra 2GB in the next 5 years either.

      I'm sure when NVIDIA releases a childs toy to compete with the 580 people will buy that too. Or do you think that "gamers" are flocking in numbers to "upgrade" to cards that are slower than the previously discontinued generation from the competitors? The Radeon 500 series were throwaways for cheap systems and basically absent from serious gamers for the past generation.

      The Vega was a step in the right direction but still largely ignored by gamers. I'm hoping the Radeon VII changes all that, and I think it may if it's priced right.

      You got 2 fantastic 1080Ti in SLI? Congratulations, even now 3 years after release there are some games you can't maximise settings on since they don't support RTX.
      You got 980TIs? Well sucks to be you because 3 years later you don't have support for HDR games.
      Did you have kepler cards? Well good luck playing even games of the day at 4K.

      Hitman 2: Minimum 2GB RAM
      Battlefield 5: Minimum 2GB RAM
      Rainbow Six Siege: Minimum 1GB RAM
      Apex Legends: Minimum 1GB RAM
      Let's pick something that is known at full settings to fill up the most demanding of cards: Cities Skylines, oh wait you can play that with 1GB of video RAM too, 512MB if you didn't install the last update.

      The current #1 bestseller on Amazon is a Radeon 580 with 8GB, $190.

      The #1 bestseller is a card that performs worse than a 6GB previous card NVIDIA has discontinued. Enjoy your "futureproofing".

      580 is a respectable midrange card that was one of the most popular for crypto mining because of its excellent hash rate to power draw, and is currently fine for 1080p gaming, hence its popularity. Looks like it's going to be selling well for quite some time to come. It's hard to argue with the price.

      No serious gamer ran 1080p@60hz in 2018 let alone 2019.

      All of the competitive shooters require 1440p@144hz just to get you into a level playing field there all designed to run better at faster speeds.

      AMD redefined the new high end bar as 16GB. The dirt cheap will be 4GB and 2GB only good enough for your grandma's email or adding video to a Ryzen box not used for graphics. As of today 8GB cards already outnumber 4GB two to one on Amazon's bestseller list.

      And before you quibble about system ram vs vram, here's the consensus on Steam. "For newer titles no unless you're content with Medium to Low settings. You will need 4GB+ of VRAM if you wish to game at 1080p at an acceptable framerate. 1440p and higher you will need 8GB+ of VRAM."

      The next most popular is 768, 14%. So roughly 95% of PC gamers are "not serious" and will be well served by RX 580 as of today, hence #1 bestseller. Future proof? No way, that's not in dispute. But it's a great way to conserve your cash waiting for the next generation to arrive because frankly, the current generation sucks in terms of value for money anywhere outside the 1080p mainstream.

      One thing you should not skimp on is VRAM because you are going to get game breaking stutters and stalls if you do.

      Huh, what are you blathering about? For gaming, 1080 means 1080p, because 1080i is only for videos. Shouldn't need to tell you that. And 60 Hz is just a refresh rate, in fact the standard refresh rate for low end monitors. Your "big distinction" is just you being confused.

      If you want to know how RX 580 does at 1080 (1080p if you insist on being an anal retard) then this article explains it as well as any. TL;DR "clearly the RX 580 is the better card in more of the games that we've tested, with the AMD card coming on top in seven of our nine tests at 1080p, and every time at 1440p." Not only does the 580 outperform its closest competitor the 1060, it sells for less and has way more VRAM. Frankly, it's hard to believe that Nvidia has the gall to sell a midrange card with 3GB, but they do. Could be just the card for you.

      The RAM in it isn't an issue and will be more than adequate for years to come (the issue is bandwidth and performance). We aren't anywhere near using all the RAM in current cards as the resolutions and textures of all but the high end setups simply don't need it. you could halve the ram in most cards and gamers would not notice a difference.

      Don't be dense, the web is overflowing with complaints about stuttering and stalls due to not enough vram, for example this one or feast your eyes on this. If you want to play those games with your gimped vram then you need to turn down settings including shadows and supersampling. It only gets worse from here. The new standard for mainstream GPUs is 8GB, too bad Nvidia didn't get the message. They will pretty soon.

      If there is one thing that stood the test of time in my 29 years of building my own pc's, it is that it makes no sense to invest money to be future proof. Buy what you need now, maybe looking a year ahead.
      What you need later will be available for less then, but the killer are changes of standards.

      Thanks for telling us you're not a gamer. Any gamer would know the distinction between resolution, and resolution at a locked frame rate. The OP said no serious gamer games at 1080p@60Hz. You countered saying 1080p was popular. Yet it is. You included a metric fuckton of non-serious gamers in your worthless statistics.

      Now come back and play with us when you have a 1080p@144Hz display. You know ... like those tiny subset of people in your statistics who are actually serious gamers.

      According to their own results it can't even maintain vsync lock on a 60Hz (shitty) monitor. Any serious gamer would consider the game unplayable at that point. Man the "Xbox play on my 30fps TV" generation really has destroyed what it means to play games if these numbnuts think this is even remotely an appropriate card for a "gamer".

      ... Man you're just going down a whirlwind of stupidity right now. The only 3GB NVIDIA card currently manufactured is the entry level 1050. Their midrange 3GB card was discontinued early last year when they exclusively started shipping 6GB cards and upgraded their RAM to GDDR5X in the process.

      Could be just the card for you.

      I have one. It's a great card for a non gaming PC. But since you don't know what the definition of gaming is, ... well come back when you're running 1080TIs in SLI watercooled. Then you too can play with the big boys.

      You can throw all of the shit metrics you want at the screen as your obviously not a serious gamer and will never actually get the point.

      Why yes 95% of gamer's are not serious they play for fun every once in a while so 1080p@60hz is fine in a $500 rig. There's no point on going above a 1660ti/1070 or the AMD equivalent it's just a waste of money if your not going to drop $500 to $1k into a monitor.

      A competitive player looking to hit at least the top 3% to 2% of the leader boards consistently will drop roughly $3k into a rig and $1k is just the monitor. You have to get to a 1440p@144hz platform just to level the playing field and that's before you actually learn how to aim and land your shots in any game. 1080p@60hz is just a crap fest your reduced to hip firing spam and pray you hit something.

      FPS and HZ is everything in most shooter games it's how you spot the bad guy faster or from longer away as there mostly cheap easy client side hitscan based damage resolution (pubg/fortnight/apex) verses something harder like server side projectile object (Tarkov). Projectile is better as every bullet fired gets run through a physic's engine but that just means you *have* to have a better rig just to play the game.

      Now if your a Minecraft or MTG:Arena player then you can run them on any old potato without wasting money on a GPU/monitor. Warcraft is in the potato area as well but for the opposite reason as they have probably the tightest netcode our there.

      I always did for a mid range card in 2019. But we weren't talking about 3GB. You can't even seem to follow the discussion in the title of your own post. You also can't seem to actually focus on current generation cards since every mid-range 3GB card you linked to is obsolete and not part of NVIDIA's current lineup.

      Both appearing for the first time that month, Vega beat RTX 2080 TI, .16% to .15%.

      If Nvidia hasn't released a card to compete with the 580 for so long, then maybe it is because they can't. Sure they can release cheap cards, but it would either be junk vs 580 or it would cannibalize their higher priced junk.

      Obviously, 95% of Steam players are not fixated on shooter leaderboards, you need to keep things in perspective. Granted, competitive players spend a lot more on their gear, so 5% of players spend maybe 15% of dollars, and margin on those products is higher. That's enough to justify R&D specifically for that segment, but never forget that the other 95% you like to disparage is where the real money is.

      1.) I didn't disparage anyone that's your view not mine. It's just a fact of any sport/hobby 95% of participants are not serious competitors they do it for fun. I never said there was a problem with that.

      On average most of that 95% spends $500 on there rig ever 5-6 years with maybe one upgrade in the cycle and they typically buy a pre-built computer and use it for everything not just gaming. While the 5% spends $2+ every 2-3 years with at least 1 upgrade in the cycle and these are usually dedicated hand built machines. If there a streamer (most are) they also have a $1k streaming computer to boot.

      My gaming rig is only used for gaming I don't even browse the web on it unless I'm pulling a driver down. My streaming rig is my daily driver.

      I've spent $2 the last two years due to a motherboard bug Gigabyte just couldn't fix but it's an odd cycle for me I'm typically in the 3 year plan.

    I currently have a 1070, and this mess of cards is very weird.

    The 2080's are to expensive for me, the 2060 and 2070's don't offer that much more for the price, and these mid range cards are about the same.

    I had been hoping that nvidia, putting out all sorts of weird cards at so many levels might put out a 2060ti or 2070ti.

    Otherwise its see y'all in 2-3- years.

    At least the 1660ti seems to be good performance for the money.

      Well, there's a couple of advantages to the 1660ti over the 1070 (which I also have). One is better framerates at resolutions higher than 1080p (and I'm at 1440), and then there's lower power consumption. Part of me wants to upgrade for those two facts alone. Selling my 1070 and getting one of these would make the 1660ti only come out to about $80, so it's worth considering.

      They do offer more, they just offer something useless. You're paying for ray-tracing hardware and anti-aliasing which is largely unused by games so far. It's their "killer feature" without actually a contract to kill.

      Mind you NVIDIA haven't had a good record of making sensible release choices. E.g. the 1070 Ti which didn't make sense (for them) as it effectively destroyed the market for the 1080 given the price and performance. Then there's the 1060, with 3GB, with 6GB, some with GDDR5 some with GDDR5X without any major announcement or indication that they produced a newer card.

      Interestingly because the core and memory size of the 1060 remains unchanged some benchmark software is quietly aggregating the scores and boosting the results of the old 1060 numbers which is curious since that would further put stress on their 1660 sales.

      The company just doesn't seem to make any sense.

      Uhhh...might want to reconsider friend, at least until they get the serious issues with the memory worked out. Look up "Nvidia GDDR 6 Failure" on YouTube and you'll see they are having some pretty damn high failure rates, turns out if you get cards that have memory made by one manufacturer (Micron IIRC) your card has a good chance of buying the farm rather quickly. Some of the big reviewers even ended up with cards that crapped out before they could finish their benchmarks so...yeah might want to hold off until they get the bugs out.

      The 20xx series aren't bad cards, but the prices are ridiculous.

      780ti launch price: $699
      980ti launch price: $649
      1080ti launch price: $699
      2080ti launch price: $1199

      nVidia screwed gamers twice, first by not raising production when demand spiked, then by maintaining their supracompetitive pricing even after the shock ended.
      Even when profiteering is legal it generates a lot of ill will with customers; in a few months, if AMD's Navi isn't complete garbage, expect a lot of formerly loyal nVidia users to switch camps.
